Job description

About Us:

Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) is a global Jewish human rights organization that confronts antisemitism and hate, defends the safety of Israel and Jews worldwide, and teaches the lessons of the Holocaust through awareness, advocacy, justice, education, and its Museums of Tolerance. With a constituency of over 400,000 member families since its founding in 1977, the SWC has an international footprint through its Museums of Tolerance, Moriah Films, and the Digital Terrorism + Hate Project.

Headquartered in Los Angeles, it maintains operations in New York, Chicago, Miami, Toronto, Paris, Berlin, Jerusalem, and Buenos Aires. It is an accredited Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) at the United Nations, UNESCO, the Organization of American States, the Latin American Parliament, and the Council of Europe and maintains relationships with the highest levels of governments throughout the world.

In 1993, the Center opened the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles to worldwide acclaim. The Museum has served as the Center’s flagship educational arm, challenging visitors to confront bigotry and racism, and to understand the Holocaust in both historical and contemporary contexts. In addition, the Center developed Moriah Media to produce theatrical documentaries to educate global audiences. Moriah has produced 17 documentaries to date, two of which have received the Academy Award for best feature documentary, The Long Way Home and Genocide.

About the Role:

The Museum of Tolerance is seeking a Retail Sales Lead to take ownership of the day-to-day operations and guest experience of the MOT Shop. This is a hands-on role for a retail professional who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment and is excited to connect visitors with meaningful, purpose-driven merchandise.

This role blends retail operations, e-commerce (Shopify), customer experience, and visual merchandising, ensuring every visitor leaves with a seamless, engaging, and memorable shopping experience that reflects the mission of the Museum of Tolerance.

The ideal candidate brings strong retail experience, confidence using Shopify or similar platforms, and the ability to elevate a retail space into a curated, high-performing store experience. Museum or cultural institution retail experience is a plus.

About You:

You are a dynamic retail professional who thrives in both customer-facing and operational work. You are hands-on, detail-oriented, and energized by a busy retail environment. You understand how to balance customer service excellence with operational efficiency and take pride in running a store that is organized, welcoming, and mission aligned.

You are proactive, solution-oriented, and comfortable taking ownership of daily store operations. You enjoy engaging with diverse audiences and naturally create a warm, welcoming experience for every visitor.

Key Responsibilities:

Retail Store Leadership & Operations

  • Lead daily operations of the MOT Shop, ensuring a smooth, efficient, and high-quality retail experience.
  • Open and close the store according to established procedures, ensuring accuracy in cash handling and reporting.
  • Maintain operational readiness, cleanliness, organization, and visual presentation of the retail space.

Customer Experience & Sales Excellence:

  • Deliver exceptional customer service to a diverse global audience, including museum visitors, students, educators, and tour groups.
  • Actively engage customers to drive sales, enhance experience, and promote mission-aligned merchandise.
  • Handle in-person, phone, and special-order inquiries with professionalism and care.
  • Model a welcoming, inclusive, and service-oriented retail environment.

E-Commerce & Shopify Management:

  • Manage and process online orders through Shopify sales platforms.
  • Oversee order fulfillment, including packaging, gift wrapping, and shipping preparation.
  • Maintain accurate product listings, inventory updates, and online storefront consistency.
  • Support integration between in-store and online retail operations.

Inventory & Merchandising:

  • Manage inventory tracking, restocking, and product organization.
  • Monitor stock levels and proactively communicate merchandise needs.
  • Support visual merchandising, product displays, and signage to maximize engagement and sales.
  • Work closely with leadership to identify trends and improve product performance.

Loss Prevention & Compliance:

  • Maintain awareness of store activity and collaborate with museum security to prevent inventory shrinkage.
  • Follow all cash handling, POS, and operational procedures with accuracy and consistency.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls and retail standards.

Additional Responsibilities (As Needed):

  • Provide cross-functional support for the Admissions/Ticket Desk, including in-person and phone ticket sales assistance.
  • Assist with operational support for museum special events, private rentals, and public programs as needed.
  • Process payments and support transaction coordination for school groups, tours, and institutional visitors.
  • Provide flexible operational support across the Museum of Tolerance to help maintain a seamless visitor experience during high-volume periods and special programming.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of retail experience, preferably in a lead, keyholder, or supervisory capacity.
  • Strong experience with Shopify or similar e-commerce platforms required.
  • Museum store, bookstore, cultural institution, or mission-driven retail experience preferred.
  • Proven ability to manage retail operations, customer service, and inventory systems.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfortable handling cash, POS systems, and operational reporting.

Our Benefits:

We value our people and offer a collaborative and engaging culture. As a SWC employee, you will enjoy work/life balance, generous time off and comprehensive benefits and programs.   The Simon Wiesenthal Center embraces inclusivity and values our diverse community. We are committed to building a team based on qualifications, merit, and business need. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
