What is shared living?

Shared living is a residential arrangement where individuals with disabilities or special needs live in a home with a provider, often a host family or caregiver, who offers support and assistance with daily activities. This model promotes independence, inclusion, and community integration by matching individuals with compatible hosts. Shared living can be a long-term or short-term support option and is often an alternative to group homes or institutional settings.

What are some common challenges faced by shared living providers and how can they be managed?

Shared Living providers often encounter challenges such as balancing the needs and preferences of individuals with disabilities while maintaining a harmonious home environment. Providers may also face emotional and logistical demands, including developing individualized support plans and handling unexpected situations. Building strong communication with the supported individual, their family, and case managers is crucial, as is seeking ongoing training and support from your agency. Regular self-care and networking with other providers can also help manage stress and promote long-term success in the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a shared living provider, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shared Living Provider, you generally need experience in caregiving, knowledge of developmental disabilities, and, in some cases, relevant certifications such as CPR/First Aid. Familiarity with documentation systems, care plans, and compliance with state regulations is also important. Compassion, patience, strong communication, and the ability to create a supportive home environment are standout soft skills. These competencies ensure high-quality care, promote independence, and foster a positive living experience for individuals receiving support.

What is the difference between Shared Living vs Caregiver?

Employer & IndustryNonprofits, housing agencies, or private individualsHealthcare providers, home care agencies, or private families
Job FocusProviding housing and support for individuals with special needs or disabilitiesAssisting with daily activities, personal care, and health management

Shared Living involves providing housing and support to individuals with special needs, often in a communal setting, with less emphasis on personal care. Caregivers focus on assisting with daily living activities and health needs, often requiring specific certifications. Both roles are essential in supporting vulnerable populations but differ mainly in scope, environment, and certification requirements.

Shared Living Opportunity
Are you a caring, energetic person looking to open your home and make a lasting difference in someone's life? A fun-loving 45-year-old man is seeking a similar aged Shared Living Provider (SLP) who can offer a welcoming, supportive, and engaging home environment.
He has a great sense of humor and enjoys watching 80's movies from his large DVD collection and singing along to country music. He takes pride in his employment, where he is a valued and well-liked member of the team. He stays active through the gym, Special Olympics basketball, bowling, dances, and dining out. Family connections are important to him, and maintaining those connections is a meaningful part of his life.
If you have an understanding of supporting individuals with special needs and value connection, laughter, and community, this could be a rewarding opportunity to share your home while supporting someone in living a full and meaningful life.
