What is a senior winemaker?

Senior Winemakers are experienced professionals who oversee the entire wine production process at a winery. They are responsible for supervising the winemaking team, developing wine blends, ensuring quality control, and making key decisions about fermentation, aging, and bottling. Senior Winemakers also work closely with vineyard managers to select the best grapes and may be involved in marketing and promoting the winery's products. Their extensive knowledge and leadership play a crucial role in maintaining the winery's reputation and producing high-quality wines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior winemaker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Winemaker, you need advanced knowledge of viticulture and enology, a degree in oenology or a related field, and substantial hands-on winemaking experience. Familiarity with winery management software, laboratory analysis tools, and quality control systems is typically required. Leadership, creativity, and strong decision-making skills help distinguish top professionals in this role. These skills are vital for ensuring high wine quality, effective team management, and the successful operation of a winery.

What are some typical challenges a senior winemaker faces during harvest season, and how are these addressed within the winery team?

During harvest season, Senior Winemakers often face challenges such as unpredictable weather, logistical coordination of grape picking, and ensuring optimal grape quality. These challenges require quick decision-making and close collaboration with vineyard managers, cellar staff, and lab technicians. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as the team must adjust schedules and processes to accommodate changing conditions. Senior Winemakers also use their experience to troubleshoot fermentation issues and maintain quality standards throughout the winemaking process.

Type: Permanent, Full-Time

Compensation: $115,000- $130,000 annual salary (depending on CA/CO location) + up to 10% annual bonus

About us:

In a nutshell, we’re all about making great wine better, for everyone. We partner directly with the world’s best independent winemakers to bring our members better-quality wine for a better price. No thirsty middlemen as far as the eye can see.

It’s a different way of doing things, sure. But it works. We’re one of the US’ favorite wine clubs, shipping over 1 million (!) cases a year to curious wine lovers. And with an ambitious road ahead, we’ve got no plans on plugging the cork on growth.

Our global team (we have offices in the UK and Australia, too) is entrepreneurial by nature, obsessive about customer experience and driven by performance. All things that make Naked a great place to grow both personally and professionally. And yes, we like wine. A lot – we even have a wine fridge in the office.

The opportunity:

It takes a village to run Naked, which is why we’re always looking for talented folks to join the bunch. Our Loyalty & Retention team is searching for a Senior E-Commerce Merchandising Manager to lead digital trading across our US and Australian sites, apps, and campaigns.

If you’re excited to optimize online customer journeys, champion our upcoming Shopify migration, and connect more wine lovers with world-class winemakers, there’s a Naked welcome pack waiting for you.

What you'll do:
Sitting at the heart of our e-commerce operations, you’ll oversee product presentation, site merchandising, and store health to maximize customer lifetime value.

  • Lead Digital Trading & Shopify Management: Shape site execution across homepages, product pages, carts, and checkout journeys. You'll act as a core business lead in our migration to Shopify, scoping requirements and embedding best-in-class site tools.
  • Drive Merchandising Campaigns: Partner with marketing and planning teams to build seasonal trading calendars, launch new wines, test pre-orders, and create high-converting promotional moments.
  • Optimize the Customer Journey: Turn site data, traffic metrics, and customer behavior into actionable improvements that boost conversion rates, average order value (AOV), and retention.
  • Manage Stock & Operational Flow: Work alongside logistics, planning, and warehousing teams to protect inventory availability for core ranges and new launches across our fulfillment centers.
  • Collaborate & Coach: Oversee day-to-day storefront operations for the US and Australia while partnering with our UK team to standardize global processes and mentor junior team members.
  • Lead, Coach & Grow the Team: Manage and mentor our e-commerce team across the US and Australia. Fostering a supportive, data-driven culture through hands-on-training, clear goal-setting, and dedicated career development.

Requirements

What you’ll bring:

This is a fast-paced, hands-on ecommerce trading role suited for a commercially sharp leader who deeply understands online retail, customer behavior, and digital product storytelling. You will bring a passion for delivering an exceptional online customer experience, blending strong UX principles and front-end merchandising capability with a disciplined, data-driven approach to performance optimization.

  • Proven E-Commerce Experience: Solid background (minimum of 5 years) managing digital storefronts, product presentation, and site trading, ideally within DTC retail, subscription models, or consumer goods. (Wine knowledge is a nice bonus, but a passion for great customer experiences is what matters most!)
  • Shopify Proficiency: Practical, hands-on experience working in Shopify.
  • Analytical Approach: Comfortable using web analytics and conversion metrics (CVR, AOV, cart abandonment) to make smart trading decisions.
  • Collaborative Leadership: Experience coaching or guiding team members and working cross-functionally across marketing, product, and supply chain teams.

The Naked values you’ll live by:

  • We are Naked Together – our business is built on an ecosystem where we must all work together. Together we can go further than we can alone.
  • We back independence – we encourage independent thinking, from our employees, our winemakers, and our Angels (that’s what we call our members).
  • We are bold – we choose courage over comfort and are not afraid to do things differently. We have a spirit of pioneering and we like to dream big.
  • We care about our craft – we have a passion for our craft – from winemaking, to customer service, to finance, to technology. We strive for excellence in everything we do.
  • We choose what’s right – doing the right thing is a choice. There are inevitable trade-offs when deciding what is right. We never cut corners.

Recruitment process:

  • Initial Screening Call (30 mins): A brief chat with our talent team to discuss your background and expectations.
  • Hiring Manager Interview (45-60 mins): A conversation with the Head of GTM Strategy and Operations on your background and e-commerce experience.
  • Final Round & Practical Case Study & Presentation: A brief exercise to show how you approach site trading and customer journey optimization and a chance to meet and speak with our VP of Loyalty and Retention.

Benefits

Your benefits (the juicy part):

As part of the Naked family, we want you to know we've got your back. Here are a few of the perks you'll enjoy when you join the team…

  • Compensation Range- $115,000 to $130,000 depending on location (CO or CA)
