What is a senior visual designer?

Senior Visual Designers are experienced professionals who create and oversee the visual aspects of products, branding, and digital experiences. They work on designing user interfaces, marketing materials, and other visuals to ensure a consistent and appealing look across all platforms. In addition to hands-on design work, they often lead design teams, collaborate with clients and stakeholders, and help set the overall creative direction for projects. Their role requires a strong understanding of design principles, user experience, and current trends in visual communication.

How does a senior visual designer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams, and what communication skills are important for success?

Senior Visual Designers frequently work closely with UX/UI designers, product managers, developers, and marketing teams to ensure cohesive visual solutions that align with brand objectives and user needs. Effective communication is key—they must clearly articulate design rationales, provide constructive feedback, and translate complex ideas into visually compelling assets. Being proactive in meetings, open to feedback, and adept at using design collaboration tools are essential skills that help foster smooth teamwork and successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior visual designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Visual Designer, you need expert-level proficiency in visual design principles, a strong portfolio demonstrating creative problem-solving, and a relevant degree in graphic or visual design. Mastery of industry-standard design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Figma, and familiarity with design systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, collaboration, and leadership skills help you articulate design decisions and mentor junior designers. These skills ensure the creation of visually compelling, brand-consistent work that meets business goals and enhances user experiences.

Job description

Ellipsis Labs is a profitable, venture-backed New York-based startup building sustainable and efficient DeFi protocols on high-throughput decentralized infrastructure. Our long-term goal is to build a better financial system.
Our flagship product, Phoenix Perpetuals, brings professional-grade perpetual futures to Solana. Building on our experience developing efficient markets, Ellipsis Labs also operates SolFi, a proprietary automated market maker that provides efficient liquidity for key trading pairs. Our foundational product, Phoenix Legacy, is a limit order book on the Solana blockchain that established our expertise in operating high-performance markets. Combined, these products have facilitated over $285B in trading volume across Solana markets.
Ellipsis Labs is seeking a Senior Designer to define and elevate the visual language of our exchange and brand across high-density, real-time trading interfaces. You'll partner with engineering and leadership to craft a cohesive, trustworthy look and feel - from component libraries to data visualization, motion, and launch assets. In this role, you will:
  • Own the visual system for Phoenix and future products: typography, color, spacing, iconography, design tokens, and component theming
  • Turn complex trading mechanics and data into clear, scannable visual hierarchies and data visualizations that perform under real-time constraints
  • Build and maintain a Figma library/design system, ensuring consistency and speed of implementation; provide developer-ready specs and assets
  • Drive visual polish on critical surfaces (order entry, positions, charts, risk states), including loading/empty/error states and micro-interactions/motion
  • Partner closely with engineers to ensure visual fidelity in production and pragmatic choices under technical constraints
  • Own the company and product brand expression across product surfaces and key moments
  • Incorporate feedback, user signals, and metrics to iterate quickly without sacrificing craft
Qualifications
Required
  • 2+ years designing visual systems for complex digital products, ideally high-density or data-heavy (trading/finance, analytics, dev tools, etc.).
  • Portfolio demonstrating strong visual craft (type, color, layout), system thinking (tokens/components), and clear data presentation.
  • Fluency in Figma (components/variants, auto-layout) and handoff practices; attention to detail across states and edge cases.
  • Comfort collaborating with engineers; ability to balance visual quality with performance and feasibility.
  • High ownership and bias to ship; you sweat the details and move quickly.

Preferred
  • Familiarity with crypto/Web3 design patterns and user behaviors
  • Exposure to Solana or similar blockchain ecosystems
