What are Visual Design Leads?

Visual Design Leads are senior design professionals responsible for guiding the visual direction of projects or products. They oversee the development of visual concepts, ensuring alignment with brand identity, user experience goals, and client needs. Visual Design Leads collaborate with cross-functional teams, mentor junior designers, and maintain consistency across all design assets. Their role is key in shaping the look and feel of digital interfaces, marketing materials, and other visual communications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Visual Design Lead, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Design Lead, you need deep expertise in visual design principles, user-centered design, and a strong portfolio demonstrating creative leadership, typically backed by a degree in design or related fields. Mastery of design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and prototyping systems, along with knowledge of design systems, is essential. Outstanding collaboration, leadership, and clear communication skills help guide teams and ensure alignment with project goals. These abilities enable the Visual Design Lead to deliver cohesive, innovative visual experiences that meet both user needs and business objectives.

In contrast, the Graphic Designer focuses on creating visual content and executing design tasks. Both roles require a strong portfolio and relevant education, but the Visual Design Lead typically has more experience and a broader scope of work.

How does a Visual Design Lead typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

As a Visual Design Lead, you will frequently work alongside product managers, UX designers, developers, and marketing teams to ensure visual consistency and clarity across products. Collaboration often involves participating in brainstorming sessions, providing design feedback, and presenting visual concepts to both creative and non-creative stakeholders. Expect to guide junior designers, align visual strategy with business goals, and adjust designs based on technical or user feedback. We build and operate advanced digital infrastructure that enables innovation, accelerates growth, and supports sustainability across aerospace, defense, medical, and other essential industries. Through our vertically integrated capabilities, including scalable additive manufacturing and precision machining, we deliver true end-to-end production at scale by combining cutting-edge technology with a foundation of proven industrial craftsmanship. Job Purpose
We're looking for a Visual Design Lead to own the VulcanForms brand and ensure it shows up with clarity, quality, and consistency across all touchpoints. This role will define and evolve our visual system, drive corporate, brand, and commercial initiatives, and shape how customers, partners, investors, and future employees understand our company.
This is a hands-on, mid-level creative role for a designer who can take complex technical concepts and turn them into clear, visually compelling work.
You will work closely with our commercial, engineering, finance, and business development teams and executive leadership to ensure VulcanForms presents a consistent, high-quality visual identity across web, presentations, technical documents, environmental design, and large-scale campaigns.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the visual direction, design language, and execution for the VulcanForms brand across digital (including socials) and physical platforms.
  • Build and maintain guidelines for typography, color, layout systems, iconography, motion, photography, and overall visual identity.
  • Produce high-quality design work across social media, website pages, technical documents, workflow illustrations, strategic presentations, trade shows, investor communications, and customer programs.
  • Partner closely with our commercial, engineering, finance, and business development teams and executive leadership to translate complex ideas and processes into clear, accurate content.
  • Raise the creative bar internally by improving the visual quality of presentations and customer-facing materials.
  • Ensure visual consistency and brand alignment across all materials.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communication, digital product design, or equivalent experience.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating excellent visual design skills, including layout, typography, hierarchy, color, and iconography.
  • 5 or more years of professional experience designing for complex or technical industries.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and execute multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines in a fast-moving environment.
  • Experience developing or extending visual design systems and brand guidelines.
  • Expertise with Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to convert technical concepts into clear, accurate visuals without oversimplifying.
  • Confidence collaborating with engineers, and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with a collaborative mindset.
  • Experience creating technical diagrams, process visuals, and data-driven graphics.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in advanced manufacturing or 3D printing.
  • Experience managing external agencies, including briefing, reviewing, and approving work.
  • Ability to write clear, compelling copy to support design work.

VulcanForms offers a competitive salary and equity package. Actual compensation is based on factors such as the candidate's skills, qualifications, and experience. In addition, VulcanForms provides comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; generous paid time off; and a 401(k) plan with company match.
The annual base salary range for this position is $103,000 to $142,000.
