They play a key role in facilitating workshops, gathering stakeholder feedback, and ensuring user-centered design solutions align with business goals. Effective communication and the ability to advocate for design decisions are essential, as Senior Product Designers often bridge the gap between user needs and technical feasibility. Regular collaboration ensures that the final product delivers a consistent and engaging user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior product designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Product Designer, you need expertise in user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design, strong problem-solving abilities, and a solid portfolio showcasing relevant design projects. Proficiency with design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, and familiarity with prototyping and user testing platforms is typically required. Exceptional communication, collaboration, and leadership skills help you influence stakeholders and mentor junior designers. These skills and qualities are essential for creating user-centered products that drive business goals and deliver outstanding user experiences.

You lead the design, development, and maturation of complex composite and metallic structures, ducting systems, fluid and thermal control components, acoustic treatments, and both stand alone and integrated heater solutions across diverse applications.
You are accountable for translating customer and system requirements into robust, producible designs, while providing technical direction throughout the full product lifecycle. This includes concept development, detailed design, tooling strategy, verification and qualification, production transition, and in-service issue resolution. You serve as a subject matter expert, drive technical decisions, lead assigned projects, mentor less experienced engineers, and represent the engineering organization in formal technical and program reviews.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Provide technical leadership for assigned ECS projects, ensuring alignment with cost, schedule, performance, and certification requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering leadership, finance, manufacturing engineering, quality, testing, program management, and production support teams to meet program objectives.
  • Lead the generation of product concepts, detailed designs, tooling concepts, drawings, and parts lists based on customer data, applied loads, performance requirements, material selection, and environmental constraints.
  • Drive design and analysis activities that meet internal standards, customer specifications, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Guide prototype development and lead efforts to transition designs into repeatable, cost-effective production.
  • Design and validate tooling and fixtures required to reliably manufacture ECS components and assemblies.
  • Serve as a technical authority in diagnosing and resolving complex issues encountered during development, testing, production, or field operation.
  • Lead investigation and resolution of escapes, non-conformances, and customer-reported field issues, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Own the generation and accuracy of parts lists and digital bills of material (BOMs), including sub-assemblies, fasteners, tooling, and hardware.
  • Lead development of technical documentation such as Acceptance Test Procedures (ATP), Qualification Test Procedures (QTP), qualification reports, and qualification by analysis and similarity justifications.
  • Produce and approve high-quality 3D models and 2D engineering drawings in compliance with ANSI and ASME Y14 GD&T standards and industry best practices.
  • Present technical status, risks, and recommendations at internal and external design and program reviews.
  • Actively mentor and support the technical development of junior and mid-level engineers.

Position Requirements
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent technical field with 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in an engineering design and development environment.
  • Deep experience designing mechanical components and systems utilizing advanced composites, elastomers, and metallic materials (e.g., ECS components, ducts, multi-layer panels) is preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of aerospace composite and metallic manufacturing processes, design for manufacturability (DFM), and design for assembly (DFA) principles is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently drive complex technical problems to closure.
  • Proven track record of knowledge sharing, mentoring, and technical leadership within engineering teams.
  • Advanced proficiency in CAD modeling and detailed drawing creation using SolidWorks and/or CATIA.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical concepts to cross-functional and customer audiences.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.

Desired Capabilities:
