What is the difference between Senior Developer Advocate vs Developer Evangelist?

AspectSenior Developer AdvocateDeveloper Evangelist
Required CredentialsTechnical background, experience in advocacy or community engagementTechnical skills, communication, marketing experience
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with product teams, attends conferences, creates contentPromotes products, public speaking, community outreach
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, open-source projectsTech companies, SaaS providers, developer communities

Both roles focus on engaging developers and promoting products, but Senior Developer Advocates typically have more technical expertise and strategic responsibilities, while Developer Evangelists emphasize outreach and community building. The roles often overlap but differ in scope and focus.

How does a senior developer advocate typically balance technical work with community engagement responsibilities?

A Senior Developer Advocate often splits their time between hands-on technical projects—like building demos, writing code samples, or contributing to open source—and external community activities, such as presenting at conferences, hosting webinars, or engaging with developers online. This balance can vary week-to-week depending on product launches or community needs, but most roles encourage collaboration with engineering, product, and marketing teams to ensure advocacy efforts align with business goals. The ability to prioritize tasks and communicate effectively across departments is crucial for success, as is staying up-to-date with industry trends and developer feedback.

What is a senior developer advocate?

A Senior Developer Advocate is a professional who acts as a bridge between a company’s engineering teams and the developer community. They help educate, support, and engage developers by creating technical content, delivering talks, and gathering feedback to improve products. Senior Developer Advocates are typically experienced engineers with strong communication skills who champion developers’ needs both inside and outside the organization. Their goal is to build relationships, encourage adoption of products or platforms, and foster vibrant technical communities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior developer advocate?

To thrive as a Senior Developer Advocate, you need a strong background in software development, deep technical expertise, and experience in community engagement or technical evangelism. Familiarity with programming languages, cloud platforms, open-source tools, and content creation systems is typically required, along with relevant certifications or public speaking experience. Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and presentation skills help you connect with both developer communities and internal teams. These abilities are crucial for effectively promoting products, fostering community trust, and bridging the gap between developers and organizations.

Senior Integration Product Manager & Developer Advocate (Vista/Spectrum)

Are you a technical leader who bridges the gap between external developer ecosystems and core product strategy? Join Trimble's Partnerships and Marketplace team to co-author a high-impact, flagship financial integration with Procore while championing the global developer community for our industry-leading Vista and Spectrum solutions.

About Us: Trimble is a global technology company that connects the physical and digital worlds, transforming the ways work gets done. With relentless innovation in precise positioning, modeling and data analytics, Trimble enables essential industries including construction, geospatial and transportation. Whether it's helping customers build and maintain infrastructure, design and construct buildings, optimize global supply chains or map the world, Trimble is at the forefront, driving productivity and progress.

AECO: The Trimble AECO segment provides digital construction solutions that increase precision and productivity for Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operations.

What Makes This Role Great:

You will wield unique influence by translating complex business logic into powerful API workflows while simultaneously acting as the strategic voice and advocate for our global developer network.

Key Exciting Responsibilities

  • Co-author a seamless, flagship integration between Procore Financials and Trimble Vista by designing detailed field-level mappings and visual workflows.

  • Serve as the dedicated Developer Advocate for Vista and Spectrum, empowering partners on "The Network" with roadmap updates, API changes, and technical consulting.

  • Channel critical external developer feedback and pain points directly back to internal product management teams to actively shape the future product roadmap.

  • Act as the premier technical subject matter expert during high-profile customer and sales consultations to articulate integration capabilities.

  • Develop high-quality technical content, including tutorials and code samples, to help independent software vendors scale their integrations.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • 7+ years of experience in Product Management, DevRel, Software Engineering, or Technical Program Management.

  • Strong technical proficiency with SQL databases, REST APIs, and the software development lifecycle.

  • Deep domain expertise in construction financial business processes and technical workflows.

  • Hands-on, practical experience working with Trimble Vista or Trimble Spectrum systems.

  • Superb communication skills with a proven ability to manage high-stakes external partnerships and author clear technical documentation.

Bonus Points For:

  • Prior experience building or managing integrations specifically between Procore and Trimble ERPs.

  • Existing relationships or active engagement within the construction technology developer community.

Logistics:

Location: Westminter, CO or Lake Oswego, OR (In-Office)

Travel Requirement: 10%
