How does a Full Time Developer Advocate typically balance coding responsibilities with community engagement activities?

A Full Time Developer Advocate often splits their time between hands-on development tasks—such as creating sample code, contributing to open source projects, or building demos—and engaging with the developer community through talks, blog posts, and social media. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management and prioritization skills, as advocates must stay technically sharp while also being accessible and responsive to community needs. Many Developer Advocates work closely with product and engineering teams to relay feedback from the community, ensuring that their contributions have a tangible impact on product direction.

What is a Full Time Developer Advocate?

A Full Time Developer Advocate is a professional who acts as a bridge between a company and the developer community. Their main role is to help developers understand and use the company's products effectively by providing technical support, creating educational resources, and gathering feedback for product improvement. Developer Advocates often speak at conferences, write blog posts, and engage with developers on forums and social media. They work closely with both engineering and marketing teams to ensure that developers' needs are addressed. The position requires strong technical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a passion for building community.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Developer Advocate, and why are they important?

Familiarity with documentation tools, code repositories (like GitHub), and experience with public speaking or content creation platforms is typically required. These skills are crucial for building strong relationships between developers and organizations, fostering engagement, and effectively promoting technical products or platforms.

Job description

At Rockstar Games, we create world-class entertainment experiences.
Become part of a team working on some of the most rewarding, large-scale creative projects to be found in any entertainment medium - all within an inclusive, highly-motivated environment where you can learn and collaborate with some of the most talented people in the industry.
Rockstar is seeking a talented Lead Developer Advocate to support our Creator Platform team, which includes the FiveM and RedM multiplayer modification platforms.
In this role, you will focus on improving the developer experience for our creators, including translating complex technical concepts into clear, accessible guides, tutorials, and API references to empower our worldwide community of creators and server owners to get the most out of our Creator Platforms.
This is a full-time, in-office position based out of Rockstar's NYC headquarters in Downtown Manhattan.
WHAT WE DO
  • The Rockstar Games Creator Platform Team deliver a technology platform that enables players to experience community created content on fully customized dedicated servers where creators can develop their own game modes and other modifications in a variety of scripting languages.
  • We provide a curated digital storefront, the Cfx Marketplace, where talented GTAV and RDR2 creators can share and sell custom scripts, assets, and more.
  • We produce developer documentation, tutorials, and learning resources that help our creator community understand our platform capabilities, APIs, and best practices.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Evangelize the use of our Creator Platform tools and technology to ensure new and existing creators have a clear path to success on FiveM and RedM.
  • Advocate for the ongoing improvement of our developer experience through prioritized feedback from the creator community and our Developer Relations.
  • Support the development of developer-oriented programs to grow the next generation of creators on our Platforms.
  • Drive the maturity of our Developer Experience, including clear and comprehensive developer documentation, getting-started guides, tutorials, how-to articles, and API references for the FiveM and RedM platforms.
  • Create step-by-step guides and templates that teach developers and creators how to build scripts, game modes, maps, props, and other content.
  • Collaborate closely with Creator Platform engineering teams to understand new features, platform changes, and technical details, and translate them into creator-facing changelogs, release notes, and migration guides for Platform updates.
  • Review and improve existing developer documentation for clarity, accuracy, and completeness, keeping it up to date as our Creator Platforms evolve.
REQUIREMENTS
  • 6+ years of experience in technical writing, developer documentation, or a related role, ideally in the gaming or software development industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to explain complex technical concepts in clear, concise, and well-structured written content.
  • Familiarity with at least one scripting or programming language (e.g., Lua, JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, or similar).
  • Experience working with documentation tooling and platforms (e.g., Markdown, static site generators, wikis, or docs-as-code workflows).
  • Strong technical comprehension, with the ability to quickly learn new technologies, APIs, and developer tools.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with experience producing tutorials, API references, or developer guides.
  • Proven leadership and people management skills, with the ability to coach, motivate, and develop team members.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with Engineering, Product Management, Developer Relations, and Community teams to gather information and ensure technical accuracy.
  • Comfort working with version control systems (e.g., Git) and contributing to documentation repositories.
  • A user-focused mindset, always considering the developer or creator audience when producing content.
PLUSES
Please note that these are desirable skills and are not required to apply for the position.
  • Previous experience with the FiveM/RedM ecosystem, Grand Theft Auto modding, or similar game modding communities.
  • Experience writing public-facing documentation for game engines, modding frameworks, or other relevant user-facing technologies.
  • Experience producing video tutorials, interactive code samples, or other multimedia learning content.
  • Understanding of creator workflows and asset pipelines in UGC or modding ecosystems.
  • Experience contributing to or collaborating with open source projects and developer communities.
