What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Second Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Second Engineer, you need strong knowledge of marine engineering principles, machinery operation, and maintenance, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and a Certificate of Competency (STCW). Familiarity with engine room management systems, diagnostic tools, and compliance with international maritime regulations is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring the safe, efficient operation of a vessel's machinery and compliance with safety and environmental standards.

What are Second Engineers?

A Second Engineer, also known as the First Assistant Engineer, is a licensed member of the engineering department on a ship. They are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the vessel's engine room and its machinery. The Second Engineer ensures that all systems are running efficiently, supervises engine room staff, and assists the Chief Engineer with technical operations and record-keeping. Their role is essential for the safe and smooth functioning of a ship's propulsion and auxiliary systems.

What is the difference between Second Engineer vs Third Engineer?

The Second Engineer and Third Engineer roles are both vital engine department positions on ships, requiring similar certifications and working in the engine room environment. The Second Engineer typically has more responsibilities, including supervising junior staff and overseeing engine maintenance, while the Third Engineer supports these tasks and handles routine maintenance. Both roles are essential for safe and efficient ship operations within the maritime industry.

What are the main responsibilities of a Second Engineer on a commercial vessel, and how do they interact with other crew members?

As a Second Engineer, you are primarily responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the vessel's engine room and machinery. This involves supervising engine room staff, conducting regular inspections, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards. You will work closely with the Chief Engineer to implement maintenance schedules and may also coordinate with deck officers and other departments to ensure smooth vessel operations. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as you will routinely delegate tasks and report maintenance activities to both senior officers and your team.

Job description

Description:

Who We Are:

Dedicated to making a difference in law enforcement agencies across the U.S., our mission is to transform policing by elevating officer performance with a preventative-based early intervention system. Driven by data science and powered by machine learning, our offering analyzes officer performance data in order to identify potentially problematic behavior. In partnership with the University of Chicago, weโ€™ve developed the worldโ€™s largest multi-jurisdictional officer performance database, and the only research-driven, evidence-based early intervention system available in policing today.

Weโ€™re also the only provider of a fully integrated, cloud-based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform that simplifies essential policing workflows. This platform is designed to be a single-source solution for all operational needs, driving extensive efficiency gains and providing best-in-class advanced analytics and insights.

Benchmark Analytics provides a comprehensive, all-in-one solution that is advancing police force management through state-of-the-art technology and market-leading data and analytics.

The Role:

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to take full-stack technical ownership of a defined product surface within our platform. You will work as a trio alongside a Product Owner and a second engineer, using our AI-augmented software development lifecycle to deliver at a pace that traditionally required much larger teams. You own the technical architecture of your surface, the quality of the code that ships, and the technical development of the engineer you are paired with.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the technical architecture and quality of a defined product surface โ€” including system design, code, tests, performance, and operational health of what ships
  • Partner with your Product Owner as a trio; bring clarity on whatโ€™s feasible, what tradeoffs exist, and how to deliver scope on the timeline youโ€™ve committed to, and push back substantively when specifications need refinement
  • Build software using AI-augmented workflows as a core practice โ€” drafting, reviewing, refactoring, testing, and documenting code with AI tools โ€” and continuously raising your effectiveness with them
  • Make architectural decisions and defend them โ€” across data models, API design, integration patterns, and system tradeoffs; document your reasoning so others can build on it
  • Mentor and develop the engineer youโ€™re paired with โ€” through code review, pairing, technical guidance, and modeling strong engineering practice
  • Maintain production responsibility for your surface โ€” including monitoring, incident response, performance, and the security posture appropriate to a platform serving regulated public sector customers
  • Contribute to platform-wide engineering standards, tooling, and processes โ€” not just your own surface
  • Support enterprise sales and customer conversations with substantive technical depth when needed
  • Write code that is correct, secure, maintainable, and tested โ€” the AI accelerates you, but the work you ship is yours

Job Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of professional software development experience, with significant time spent owning full-stack product features end to end
  • Strong production experience with Node.js, React, PostgreSQL (or equivalent relational database), and modern HTML/CSS
  • Production experience with AWS (or equivalent cloud platform), CI/CD pipelines, and the operational practices required to run customer-facing systems reliably
  • Fluency with AI-assisted development workflows; you already use AI tools daily in your professional work
  • Sound architectural judgment โ€” you can reason through tradeoffs across data, API, and system design, and explain those tradeoffs clearly
  • Experience working in an agile or continuous-delivery environment as a senior IC
  • Strong written and verbal communication; you write code, comments, and documentation that others can build on
  • Demonstrated track record of mentoring or developing other engineers
  • Comfort with ambiguity and incomplete information; you ask focused questions and move forward with sound judgment
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience
  • Preferred: Experience with Electron-based desktop applications
  • Preferred: Experience with component libraries such as Ant Design, Material UI, or Styled Components
  • Preferred: Experience building data-intensive products where presenting analytical outputs to non-technical users is a core design challenge
  • Preferred: Experience with products that serve regulated industries where security, audit, and compliance are first-class concerns
  • Preferred: Experience supporting mission-critical platforms requiring 24x7 uptime
  • Preferred: Experience taking a product from zero to one, not just iterating on established systems
  • Preferred: Familiarity with security practices appropriate for public safety data
  • Preferred: Experience in law enforcement, public safety, or govtech domains
  • Preferred: Experience working in an early- to growth-stage startup environment

What We Offer:

  • A competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Unlimited Paid Time Off.
  • Ability to work in a fully remote environment (must be based in the U.S. and willing to work in Central Time Zone).
  • Summer Half-Day Fridays.
  • Freed Up Fridays during Spring, Fall, and Winter months to promote productivity and dedicated heads-down work time.
  • Medical, dental, and vision plan offerings along with 401(k).
  • Employer-paid Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, and Life Insurance.
  • Other Voluntary Benefits include additional Life Insurance, Spouse Life Insurance, and Accident Insurance.
  • The satisfaction that comes with being part of a solution that has real impact in the world.
  • A diverse workforce and inclusive environment that embraces unique contributions and experiences.
  • An empowered culture that encourages creativity and professional growth.

Estimated Annual Salary Range:

  • $150k - $170k; based on role, experience, and location

Additional Information:

  • Benchmark Analytics is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We value diversity of all kinds in our effort to create a stellar workforce of committed and passionate team members.
  • Unfortunately, we are not able to sponsor employment visas at this time, so we can only accept applications from candidates who are authorized to work in the U.S.
