What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Search Engine Rater, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Search Engine Rater, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a good understanding of web search and internet culture, often supported by a high school diploma or higher. Familiarity with online evaluation tools, search engines, and sometimes proprietary rating guidelines is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and the ability to follow complex instructions set top performers apart. These abilities ensure that search results are accurately evaluated, improving the quality and relevance of information presented to users.

What are some common challenges faced by Search Engine Raters, and how can they be managed?

Search Engine Raters often encounter the challenge of interpreting complex guidelines and applying them consistently across a wide range of search queries and content. Staying up-to-date with frequent updates to these guidelines requires attention to detail and adaptability. To succeed, it helps to review guideline updates regularly, take scheduled breaks, and engage with available support forums or training resources to clarify uncertainties.

What are Search Engine Raters?

SEO/AEO Specialist

Clix

Full-time

Job description

Salary:

For more than 15 years, Clix has built a strong reputation on search performance. We keep our clients' digital marketing strategies ahead of the curve so they stay competitive in their vertical and achieve the business and marketing objectives that matter most.

SEO is at an inflection point and it's moving fast. Legacy workflows are being replaced by AI-native systems and AEO strategies built for the future of search. At Clix, we're not waiting on this shift. We're ahead of it. And to do it at the pace our clients deserve, we need people who can execute the fundamentals at a high level while showing up with the curiosity and work ethic to grow into what comes next.

If you have a solid foundation in SEO, you're already using AI to work smarter, and you want to learn how evolving AI-native SEO delivery works in practice, this is where you want to be.

What You'll Do

  • Execute SEO across assigned accounts with full command of the fundamentals: keyword research, on-page/local/technical optimizations, content alignment, link building, site architecture, schema markup, crawl management, and indexation.
  • Implement optimizations directly in client CMS platforms (primarily WordPress) accurately and without needing a developer for every change. Must be adaptable to other content management systems and capable of problem-solving to implement optimizations without developer dependency.
  • Support SEO/AEO strategy on assigned accounts. You understand how search is changing, you're paying attention to AI Overviews and LLM citation behavior, and you're adapting how you work accordingly.
  • Apply AI tools to the repeatable parts of your workflow.
  • Monitor organic performance (keyword rankings, AI visibility, conversion rate, conversions, etc.) across assigned accounts. Flag issues, surface opportunities, and bring proactive recommendations rather than waiting to be asked.
  • Contribute to client-facing reports and updates: clear, grounded in data, and positioned for someone who cares about material business performance v. only visibility.
  • Collaborate with the SEO/AEO Strategist and broader team to support campaign execution and improve how we deliver. What you bring to the team should make everyone more capable.
  • Assist with alignment between SEO keyword strategy and paid search campaigns (via our paid search strategists) where applicable.
  • Stay current on algorithm updates, AI search behavior, and platform changes. Bring what matters back to the team.

What We're Looking For

  • 2+ years of hands-on SEO experience executing real campaigns across at least two of: local, technical, national, and e-commerce. You know how to do the work, not just describe it.
  • Comfortable working directly in WordPress, primarily, and other content management systems if required. You can implement on-page changes, fix technical issues, and navigate a CMS without bottlenecks.
  • Proficiency with SEMrush, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, Google Search Console, Google Business Profile, GA4, or alternative analysis platforms a must.
  • Working understanding of technical SEO: site structure, crawlability, page speed, and how they affect rankings in practice.
  • Experience using AI tools in your professional workflow to reduce manual work or improve output quality.
  • Familiarity with AI Overviews and the direction search is heading. You're curious about AEO, paying attention, and open to adapting how you work.
  • Strong time management across multiple active accounts. You can prioritize without being told what's urgent. Must be able to - eventually - build your own work lists and operate with independence and performance ownership.
  • Clear, professional communication. Your reports and documentation are accurate, concise, and easy for someone else to act on.
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.

Bonus Points

  • You've used an AI platform (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or similar) to build something that created efficiency, removed/reduced admin work, and/or automated (with quality) task(s); must be able to prove programming
  • Experience working with paid search teammates, and the ability to align keyword strategy across SEO and paid search.
  • Familiarity with Conversion Rate Optimization principles.
  • You've contributed a process, template, or tool that made a teammate's job easier and can describe the impact.
  • Certifications:
    • Google Analytics 4 (GA4) Certification
    • HubSpot Inbound Marketing and SEO Certifications
    • SEMrush SEO Certification
    • MOZ SEO Essentials or equivalent
