Role Purpose

The Sales Applications Engineer serves as the technical bridge between customers and manufacturing by evaluating customer requirements, developing manufacturable solutions, preparing accurate quotations, and supporting the sales process from initial inquiry through production launch. This role combines engineering knowledge, commercial awareness, and customer service to ensure customer designs are optimized for photochemical etching while supporting profitable business growth.

The Sales Applications Engineer collaborates closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Customer Service to provide timely quotations, technical guidance, and project coordination while delivering exceptional customer experience.

Scope & Responsibilities Key Responsibilities
  • Perform assigned duties in accordance with documented procedures and work instructions.
  • Review customer drawings, CAD models, specifications, and technical documentation to determine manufacturability using photochemical etching processes.
  • Evaluate customer applications and recommend design modifications to improve manufacturability, quality, cost, and delivery.
  • Develop accurate manufacturing cost estimates based on material, labor, tooling, process requirements, outside services, and production efficiencies.
  • Prepare timely and accurate customer quotations while ensuring pricing aligns with company objectives and profitability targets.
  • Interpret customer RFQs, purchase specifications, prints, quality requirements, and purchase order requirements to identify and resolve discrepancies prior to order acceptance.
  • Manage the customer contract review process prior to acceptance of purchase orders and sales orders, ensuring customer requirements are clearly understood and aligned with quoted terms, manufacturing capabilities, quality requirements, pricing, and delivery commitments.
  • Collaborate with Engineering to establish manufacturing methods for new products.
  • Coordinate new product introduction activities between Sales, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality.
  • Act as the primary technical resource for customers during the quoting and pre-production process.
  • Communicate technical capabilities, process limitations, tolerances, materials, and manufacturing recommendations to customers.
  • Work with customers to optimize part designs for chemical etching and secondary operations.
  • Support Sales Engineers and Account Managers with technical presentations, customer visits, and design consultations.
  • Participate in customer conference calls and meetings to discuss technical requirements and project status.
  • Maintain quotation records, estimating data, pricing history, and engineering documentation.
  • Update ERP/CRM systems with quotation activity, customer communications, and project status.
  • Coordinate with Purchasing regarding raw material pricing and outside processing costs.
  • Contact approved vendors, as needed, to obtain job-specific estimates for raw materials and secondary/outside processing services to support timely and accurate quotation development and expedite the purchasing process.
  • Support engineering change requests and evaluate commercial impacts of design revisions.
  • Monitor quoted versus actual manufacturing costs and recommend pricing improvements.
  • Assist in developing standard costing models and estimating tools.
  • Support prototype and first-article production activities.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on quotation accuracy, lead times, and customer responsiveness.
  • Assist in the investigation and resolution of nonconformance issues, as required, including coordination with Quality, Engineering, Manufacturing, suppliers, and customers to address technical and commercial impacts.
  • Assist in resolving technical questions, quality concerns, and manufacturing issues related to customer products.
  • Support ISO 9001, AS9100, and ITAR compliance requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality of customer proprietary information and technical data.
  • Travel periodically to customer sites, trade shows, and supplier locations as required.
Work Experience & Skills Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related technical field preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of technical education and relevant manufacturing experience may be considered.
Experience
  • 3–7 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, applications engineering, estimating, technical sales, or a similar customer-facing engineering role.
  • Experience in photochemical machining, precision manufacturing, sheet metal fabrication, metal processing, or similar industries preferred.
  • Experience preparing manufacturing quotations and cost estimates.
  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings and GD&T.
Skills / Knowledge
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD files, and customer specifications.
  • Knowledge of photochemical etching processes preferred.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing cost estimating principles.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong customer communication and relationship-building abilities.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems and CRM software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks is preferred.
  • Knowledge of quality systems including ISO 9001 and AS9100 preferred.
  • Understanding of ITAR compliance requirements.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple customer projects in a fast-paced environment.
