What is a report developer?

Report Developers are professionals who design, build, and maintain reports that help organizations analyze data and make informed decisions. They work with various data sources and reporting tools, such as SQL, Power BI, or Crystal Reports, to create visualizations, dashboards, and detailed reports. Their role involves understanding business requirements, ensuring data accuracy, and presenting complex information in an easy-to-understand format. Report Developers often collaborate with business analysts, data engineers, and stakeholders to deliver effective reporting solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a report developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Report Developer, you need strong analytical abilities, proficiency in SQL, data modeling, and typically a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with reporting tools such as Microsoft SSRS, Power BI, or Tableau, as well as familiarity with database management systems, is often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for collaborating with stakeholders and translating data into actionable insights. These skills ensure accurate, timely, and meaningful reports that support business decision-making.

What are some common challenges report developers face when working with stakeholders to define reporting requirements?

Report Developers often encounter challenges such as translating non-technical stakeholder requests into actionable data requirements and ensuring data accuracy and relevance. Managing expectations around report delivery timelines and navigating ambiguous or evolving business needs can also be difficult. Effective communication and iterative feedback are crucial to clarifying requirements and delivering reports that truly support business decisions.

No remote, no relocations, no sponsorship.
The nature of this role is not conducive to working remotely. This Colleague will work with many people in all areas of our complex operation. You will drive the health of this Self-Managed operation, impacting our improvement and growth. You won't succeed in that if you aren't on-site with the rest of us.
Company Description
The Morning Star Company and its affiliates operate three tomato processing facilities in Central California, processing 35% to 40% of the California processing tomato crop, in addition to tomato transplanting, harvesting and trucking operations. The company employs approximately 400 year-round and 2,000 seasonal colleagues and annual sales of approximately $1 billion.
The Morning Star Company is the largest independent producer of bulk tomato ingredient products (tomato paste and diced tomatoes) in the world. We also produce canned tomatoes, tomato products and specialty sauces in pouches for customers in the retail and food service markets. The company is known worldwide for its innovation and integrity.
We are organizationally structured through a system we term Mission Focused Self- Management™. Our company is operated by colleagues without titles or an appointed hierarchy of authority. Authority relative to other colleagues' activities is lateral, with our Mission as our guiding principle of action, and respect, influence and success built based on each colleague's integrity, competency, effort, persistence, and straightforward persuasiveness. Although we have grown significantly, we intend to maintain a culture of individual responsibility and self-management.
The Opportunity
The Mission of this colleague will be to provide all Colleagues ready access to accurate and timely reports in order to improve Colleague productivity.
This role will be based in our Woodland office. Our ideal person for this role will combine the needed technical skill with a genuine curiosity to understand and explore the context of the data being reported. These, along with a true service orientation will make for the superstar we want to meet.
The SQL Report Developer is primarily responsible for creating and maintaining the company's Microsoft Business Intelligence reporting products used by Accounting/Administration, Manufacturing and Agricultural colleagues. Additional responsibilities include query/report development and maintenance, and data warehouse design and implementation.
Primary Function
  • Design, develop and maintain dashboards and reports using Microsoft PowerBI and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
  • Design, develop, and maintain databases and store procedures using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studios (SSMS)
  • Build required infrastructure for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from various data sources
  • Manage the distribution of reports with scheduled and data driven subscriptions
  • Work with limited database documentation to build accurate queries directly in SQL. This may require some reverse engineering of existing stored procedures and reports written by other colleagues and developers to fulfill requirements.
  • Work with Business Unit colleagues to determine development needs for data automation, dashboards, and reporting requirements under tight timelines.
  • Provides status reports that give a detailed description of the current projects progress and indicates time devoted to each task.
Qualifications
  • US work authorization (Required)
  • Onsite work location (Required)
  • 1-3 years of experience designing and developing dashboards with MS PowerBI
  • 1-3 years of MS SQL coding experience
If you happen to have experience with the following, we consider it a plus:
  • MS Fabric, Lakehouse, Notebook, and Semantic Modeling
  • Designing and maintaining data warehouses and data pipelines
  • Query optimization, indexes, and performance tuning techniques
  • SQL Server Integration Services and Analysis Services (SSIS/SSAS)
Compensation: Salary will be $75,000 - $100,000 DOQ
