Job description

Summary

The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing key accounting functions that support the company's financial operations and compliance requirements. This role owns payroll accounting, state tax compliance, revenue recognition, grant accounting, and serves as a co-owner of the general ledger and month-end close process. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and thrives in a fast-paced environment where they can improve processes while ensuring financial accuracy and regulatory compliance.

Core Responsibilities

Payroll & Payroll Accounting
  • Manage and oversee the bi-weekly payroll process in partnership with Human Resources and the payroll provider.
  • Review payroll for accuracy prior to processing.
  • Prepare and reconcile payroll-related journal entries.
  • Reconcile payroll liability accounts and payroll-related balance sheet accounts.
  • Ensure timely payroll tax filings and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Support payroll audits and year-end reporting, including W-2 preparation and reconciliations.
State Tax Compliance
  • Manage state payroll tax registrations for new employee work locations.
  • Maintain employer accounts for unemployment insurance, withholding tax, and other required state registrations.
  • Monitor state tax notices and coordinate timely responses.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with multi-state payroll tax requirements.
  • Partner with HR to support remote workforce compliance initiatives.
Revenue Recognition
  • Prepare monthly revenue recognition calculations in accordance with U.S. GAAP (ASC 606).
  • Reconcile revenue-related accounts and investigate variances.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Revenue Cycle, and FP&A to ensure accurate recording of revenue.
  • Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for monthly close and external audits.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance revenue accounting accuracy and efficiency.
Grant Accounting
  • Maintain accounting records for grant-funded programs.
  • Track grant expenditures against approved budgets.
  • Prepare grant reimbursement requests and financial reports for grantors.
  • Ensure compliance with grant agreements and applicable regulations.
  • Coordinate grant-related audit requests and documentation.
General Ledger Co-Ownership
  • Serve as a primary owner of the general ledger alongside the Controller.
  • Prepare and review journal entries.
  • Perform monthly account reconciliations.
  • Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
  • Maintain supporting documentation for all balance sheet accounts.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls and accounting policies.
Financial Reporting & Process Improvement
  • Assist in preparing monthly financial statements and management reporting packages.
  • Support annual financial statement audits and tax return preparation.
  • Identify opportunities to automate and improve accounting processes.
  • Develop and maintain accounting procedures and documentation.
  • Participate in special projects and system implementations as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP.
  • Experience with payroll accounting and multi-state payroll tax compliance.
  • Experience with revenue recognition principles.
  • Experience preparing account reconciliations and journal entries.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

Nice to Haveย 

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Experience with grant accounting.
  • Experience in healthcare, behavioral health, or a high-growth startup environment.
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems such as NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or similar.
  • Experience working with outsourced payroll providers (ADP, Rippling, Gusto, etc.).

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job operates in an office environment. May work in one of Boulder Care's offices or remotely. Routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and printers.

Physical Demands

This is a largely sedentary role; some job duties may require the ability to lift up to 10 pounds, bend and/or stand as necessary.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This position is a full-time position. Team members may work with their managers to adjust work hours to suit the needs of the position. Team members may be asked to work additional days as work demands require.

Compensation

The starting pay range for this position is $80,000 - 95,000 per year; base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave).
