What Does a Remote Recruiter Do?

A remote recruiter finds qualified candidates to fill job openings for their clients. Unlike recruiters that work in the office, remote recruiters often work from home. Your responsibilities include meeting with clients to discuss their hiring needs and obtain a list of qualifications and duties for the role. You search job boards, social media networks, and other relevant sites to identify job seekers that meet the criteria preferred by your client. Most remote recruiters perform an initial screening with the candidate on the phone and then may meet in person before forwarding the job seeker's information on to the hiring supervisor at the company. Remote recruiters are usually paid a commission if their client hires the candidate they found.

About WeVote

WeVote is a nonpartisan, volunteer-powered nonprofit using technology to help voters make informed decisions and participate in democracy more easily. We are a Fast Forward nonprofit technology grantee and a fully remote organization made up of 120+ volunteers across the U.S.

We build open-source tools used by millions of voters, and we do it with a distributed team of people who care deeply about impact, collaboration, and sustainable volunteering.

What Makes This Role Special

  • Work with volunteers from all backgrounds who share your commitment to fair, accessible elections.
  • Learn from experienced mentors through weekly team meetings and regular check‑ins.
  • Make real decisions about who joins our team — your voice matters. (Our recent recruiter helped fill 50+ volunteer roles.)
  • Recruit volunteers across many areas, from high school students to experienced professionals.
  • Build skills that transfer directly to paid recruiting positions.

What You’ll Do

Your main responsibilities

  • Screen applications and conduct video interviews with potential volunteers.
  • Guide candidates from their first expression of interest through joining our team.
  • Partner with our Talent Acquisition Operations team to create and publish new roles.
  • Share WeVote’s mission and help candidates understand how they can contribute.
  • Suggest improvements to make our recruiting process more welcoming and effective.
  • Work with our team to create volunteer opportunities for people with different skill sets.

Skills you’ll develop

  • Learn to use recruiting software and conduct remote interviews.
  • Practice fairly assessing candidates with different backgrounds and skills.
  • Gain experience recruiting for both technical and community‑focused roles.
  • Understand how mission‑driven organizations find and welcome talent.

Who We’re Looking For

  • Recruiting professionals with 1+ years of experience, OR recent graduates interested in launching a talent acquisition career.
  • Passionate about using technology to strengthen American democracy.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • 5–6 hours weekly availability, including one hour for weekly team meetings.
  • Committed to nonpartisan civic engagement and voter empowerment.
  • Located in the United States (required) and comfortable working remotely.

We especially value

  • Experience volunteering or organizing in your community (in any capacity).
  • Interest in technology that serves everyone, not just profit.
  • Personal understanding of barriers people face in civic participation.
  • Experience working with people from different backgrounds and communities.

What You’ll Gain
Professional development

•     Real recruiting experience you can highlight in future job applications.
•     Mentorship from professionals who invest in your growth.
•     Strong recommendations and concrete examples of your contributions.
•     Network connections in nonprofit, civic, and technology communities.
Personal impact
•     Direct contribution to tools that help millions of voters access information.
•     Experience building inclusive, welcoming communities.
•     Skills in connecting people with meaningful opportunities.
•     A role in a transparent, community‑driven movement for democracy.
Community connection
•     Join volunteers from many different professional and personal backgrounds.
•     Monthly opportunities to connect with contributors across the country.
•     Exposure to teams working on technology, design, outreach, and advocacy.
Our Commitment to Inclusion & Accessibility
WeVote is fully volunteer‑driven, and we are proud of our grassroots model. We welcome volunteers of all races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, abilities, ages, income levels, and political perspectives — everyone committed to fair, accessible elections. Whether you’re new to this work or bring years of experience, there’s a place for you.
We know that unpaid roles present barriers. We offer flexible hours and encourage open discussion of needed accommodations for technology, time, or work style. If you need support to participate fully, please let us know — we’re committed to working with you.

•     Any questions you have for us.
Don’t worry if your background doesn’t match everything we’ve listed — we value diverse experiences and perspectives. Whether you’re starting your career, changing directions, or looking to use your experience for social good, we want to hear from you.
