What is remote outpatient coding?

Remote outpatient coding is the process of assigning standardized medical codes to outpatient medical records and procedures while working from a location outside of a traditional healthcare facility, such as from home. Outpatient coders review patient charts for services like doctor visits, minor surgeries, and diagnostic tests, and translate these services into codes used for billing and insurance reimbursement. Remote coding offers flexibility and can be done for hospitals, clinics, or third-party coding companies. Coders must be familiar with coding systems like ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS, and often require certification such as CPC or CCS. Remote outpatient coders play a critical role in ensuring accurate billing and compliance with healthcare regulations.

What are remote outpatient coding jobs?

Remote outpatient coding jobs focus on processing medical paperwork. In this field, your duties may include reviewing billing and insurance claims, sending an invoice to a patient after calculating the amount owed, coding the diagnosis and procedure used for the patient, and providing other clerical services as needed. A remote outpatient coding job is a work from home position that can function independently or as part of a full virtual clinic. Remote outpatient coders frequently enter assigned codes into computer abstraction systems, review records for completeness and accuracy, contact health care staff to clarify questions, and ensure patient confidentiality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote outpatient coder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Outpatient Coder, you need in-depth knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems, generally supported by a coding certification such as CCS, CPC, or CCA. Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems and computer-assisted coding software is typically required. Strong attention to detail, time management, and the ability to work independently are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate coding, compliance with regulations, and efficient workflow in a remote healthcare environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote outpatient coding roles and how can they be managed?

Remote outpatient coders often face challenges such as staying updated with frequent coding guideline changes, managing distractions at home, and maintaining clear communication with providers or team members. To overcome these, it's important to set up a dedicated workspace, adhere to a structured daily schedule, and participate in ongoing training or webinars. Additionally, leveraging collaborative tools and regularly checking in with colleagues helps ensure coding accuracy and fosters a supportive remote work environment.

What is the difference between Remote Outpatient Coding vs Remote Inpatient Coding?

Remote Inpatient Coding focuses on hospital inpatient records, often requiring CCS certification. While both roles involve medical coding, they differ mainly in work environment and the type of patient records handled.

Is it easy to get a remote job as a remote outpatient coder?

Securing a remote outpatient coding position depends on factors such as experience, certification (like CPC or CCS), and familiarity with coding software. While demand for remote coders is growing, competition can be high, and strong attention to detail and knowledge of coding guidelines are essential for success.

Job description

Company: Revu Healthcare

Position Type: Independent Contractor (1099) — Flexible / On-Call Roster

Work Location: Remote

Hours: Variable, project-based — no guaranteed weekly hours; availability requested as projects arise (typically 15+ hours/week when active on a project)

About Revu Healthcare

Revu Healthcare is a healthcare consulting firm specializing in compliance, revenue integrity, and audit review services. Our team includes certified coders, consultants, nurses, and physicians dedicated to helping healthcare organizations maintain regulatory compliance and coding accuracy.

We partner with hospitals, health systems, and consulting organizations to deliver high-quality outpatient coding audits, validation reviews, and compliance support.

Position Overview

Revu Healthcare is building a talent pool of experienced Outpatient Medical Coders (CPC) to support coding validation and audit projects on an as-needed basis. This is a 1099 independent contractor role structured around our project pipeline: once onboarded, you'll be added to our roster of qualified coders and contacted as matching project work becomes available. Acceptance into the roster does not guarantee immediate or continuous assignment — placement depends on active client project needs, and contractors may experience periods without active work between projects.

This role is ideal for professionals with strong outpatient coding experience who want flexible, project-based work and are comfortable being on standby between engagements.

Responsibilities (when assigned to an active project)

  • Perform outpatient coding reviews and validation audits
  • Review medical record documentation to ensure coding accuracy and compliance
  • Identify coding discrepancies and provide clear rationales
  • Follow client-specific audit tools, workflows, and scorecards
  • Meet project productivity and quality expectations
  • Attend project kick-off calls, training sessions, and periodic team meetings as needed
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and data security standards
  • Submit completed work and time entries according to project requirements

Responsibilities (when not actively assigned)

  • Maintain access to client systems by logging in once a month

Required Qualifications

  • Completion and passing of the Revu Healthcare outpatient coding assessment
  • Active CPC certification (AAPC) — CPC-A not accepted
  • Minimum 5 years of outpatient coding experience
  • Prior coding audit or validation experience
  • Ability to commit to 15+ hours per week when actively assigned to a project
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • CPT coding guidelines
    • ICD-10-CM coding
    • Outpatient facility coding
  • Experience working in various EMR systems
  • Proficiency with:
    • Microsoft Teams
    • Microsoft Outlook
    • Excel
  • Strong written communication skills for audit rationales
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with outpatient ED coding reviews
  • Experience with Epic or Cerner
  • Prior consulting or contract coding experience
  • Familiarity with audit scorecards and QA processes
  • Specialization in Evaluation & Management (E/M) coding
  • Experience with surgical coding
  • Facility/technical coding experience

Additional Information

  • This is a remote, flexible, project-based independent contractor role. Successful applicants are added to Revu Healthcare's talent roster and contacted as project opportunities arise that match their qualifications.
  • There is no guarantee of a minimum number of hours, ongoing work, or a specific start date; assignment timing depends entirely on client project demand.
  • Contractors are permitted, but not required, to work weekends and after-hours (5:00 PM–9:00 AM ET) if it suits their schedule; work may be completed at any time within project deadlines.
  • Contractors must maintain their own equipment and secure internet connection.
  • All work must be performed in compliance with HIPAA and client confidentiality requirements.
