What is remote online proofreading?

Remote online proofreading is a job where individuals review and correct written content for errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting from a remote location, usually from home. Proofreaders ensure that documents are polished and error-free before publication or submission. This role often involves working with a variety of content, such as articles, books, websites, and academic papers, and communicating with clients or editors via email or project management platforms. The flexibility of remote online proofreading allows professionals to work for multiple clients or companies, often on a freelance or contract basis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote online proofreader?

To thrive as a Remote Online Proofreader, you need excellent command of grammar, punctuation, and spelling, often supported by a degree in English, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with editing tools like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and style guides such as APA or Chicago Manual of Style is typically required. Attention to detail, strong time management, and clear communication stand out as essential soft skills. These abilities ensure accuracy, consistency, and reliability, which are critical for delivering high-quality, error-free content remotely.

What are some common challenges faced by remote online proofreaders, and how can they overcome them?

Remote online proofreaders often encounter challenges such as managing tight deadlines, staying focused without in-person supervision, and dealing with inconsistent document formats. To overcome these, it's essential to develop strong time management skills, create a dedicated and distraction-free workspace, and become proficient with proofreading tools and style guides. Regular communication with clients or team members also helps clarify expectations and ensures consistency in deliverables.

Job description

Book Editing And Proofreading

British Book Publishers UK has worked with authors since 2012, helping books move from rough manuscripts to polished, readable publications. We are looking for an experienced editor and proofreader to support our affordable book editing and proofreading work across a range of genres. Good writing matters. This role suits someone with a sharp eye, strong language skills, and a genuine interest in helping authors present their work clearly.

As a Book Editor and Proofreader, you will review manuscripts for spelling, grammar, punctuation, clarity, consistency, and overall readability. You will work closely with different types of manuscripts and provide useful editorial feedback while respecting each author's voice. The role involves copy editing, proofreading, checking formatting issues, tracking changes, meeting agreed deadlines, and preparing clean files for the next stage of publication. Attention to small details is essential.

Qualifications
  • Previous experience in book editing, proofreading, copy editing, or publishing
  • Excellent written English and strong knowledge of grammar and punctuation
  • Familiarity with UK English spelling and publishing standards
  • Ability to spot inconsistencies, errors, repeated content, and formatting issues
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills
  • Confidence using Microsoft Word and Track Changes
  • Ability to manage several manuscripts and meet deadlines
  • A degree in English, Publishing, Journalism, Literature, or a related field is preferred but not required

This is a remote opportunity for someone who can work independently and communicate clearly with the British Book Publishers UK team. Experience with fiction, non-fiction, children's books, academic content, or other publishing categories will be useful. We welcome editors and proofreaders who understand the value of affordable book editing and proofreading without lowering the standard of the final manuscript.
