What does a Remote Materials Engineer do?

A Remote Materials Engineer is responsible for researching, developing, and testing materials used in a wide range of products, often working from a location outside the traditional office or laboratory setting. They use digital tools to collaborate with teams, analyze data, and provide recommendations about materials selection, performance, and sustainability. These engineers play a key role in product development by ensuring materials meet specific technical and safety standards, often working in industries like aerospace, automotive, construction, and manufacturing.

How do Remote Materials Engineers effectively collaborate with on-site teams during the development and testing of new materials?

Remote Materials Engineers typically use a combination of virtual meetings, collaborative design platforms, and regular status updates to stay closely aligned with on-site teams. They may review test data, analyze results, and provide recommendations using secure file-sharing tools and laboratory management software. Proactive communication and clear documentation are essential to ensure that lab procedures, testing protocols, and project milestones remain synchronized. This collaborative approach helps bridge physical distance and keeps the engineering process efficient and cohesive.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Materials Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Materials Engineer, you need a strong background in materials science, engineering principles, and problem-solving, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with tools such as CAD software, materials testing systems, and simulation programs like ANSYS or COMSOL is usually required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management are critical soft skills for collaborating with remote teams and managing independent projects. These skills and qualities ensure effective design, analysis, and innovation in material solutions while working efficiently from a remote setting.

Job description

Andromeda Systems Incorporated (ASI) is seeking a Journeyman Materials Engineer to support the Materials Protection Team (MPT). This role is critical to supporting various military aircraft depot overhaul programs by applying materials and process engineering principles to our core areas of expertise: inorganic coatings, cleaning, organic coatings, corrosion, wear, preservation, and additive manufacturing, specifically cold spray. This position is eligible for remote work.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide materials engineering support for production processes including electroplating, surface finishing, cleaning, depainting, and painting operations
  • Investigate material and process non-conformances, perform root cause analysis, and develop corrective and preventive actions
  • Conduct failure analysis and material evaluations using laboratory equipment such as thickness gauges, optical and scanning microscopes, conductivity meters, and hardness testers
  • Prepare formal engineering reports documenting laboratory findings, technical analyses, and recommendations for process improvements
  • Review, update, and support development of material protection process specifications and technical documentation
  • Support research, development, testing, and evaluation (RDT&E) efforts through Design of Experiments (DOE), test plan development, and material characterization testing
  • Perform hands-on coating applications and laboratory testing including corrosion, environmental, and thermal exposure evaluations
  • Analyze test results to assess material performance and recommend material selection, optimization, or process improvements
  • Collaborate with government stakeholders, program managers, and production personnel to communicate technical findings and resolve engineering issues
  • Contribute to project execution within the Materials Protection Team while ensuring compliance with contractual, regulatory, and technical standards

  • Practical knowledge of one or more of the following material process areas: electroplating, inorganic/organic coatings, chemical cleaning/stripping, corrosion control, and wear-resistant technologies
  • Experience with materials characterization and analytical techniques (e.g., microscopy, spectroscopy, mechanical testing, or electrochemical testing)
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot technical problems, perform root cause analysis, and implement effective solutions
  • Strong technical writing skills with experience generating formal engineering reports, test plans, and technical procedures
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team

Preferred Qualifications:
