What does a remote materials engineer do?

A Remote Materials Engineer is responsible for researching, developing, and testing materials used in a wide range of products, often working from a location outside the traditional office or laboratory setting. They use digital tools to collaborate with teams, analyze data, and provide recommendations about materials selection, performance, and sustainability. These engineers play a key role in product development by ensuring materials meet specific technical and safety standards, often working in industries like aerospace, automotive, construction, and manufacturing.

How does a remote materials engineer effectively collaborate with on-site teams during the development and testing of new materials?

Remote Materials Engineers typically use a combination of virtual meetings, collaborative design platforms, and regular status updates to stay closely aligned with on-site teams. They may review test data, analyze results, and provide recommendations using secure file-sharing tools and laboratory management software. Proactive communication and clear documentation are essential to ensure that lab procedures, testing protocols, and project milestones remain synchronized. This collaborative approach helps bridge physical distance and keeps the engineering process efficient and cohesive.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote materials engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Materials Engineer, you need a strong background in materials science, engineering principles, and problem-solving, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with tools such as CAD software, materials testing systems, and simulation programs like ANSYS or COMSOL is usually required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management are critical soft skills for collaborating with remote teams and managing independent projects. These skills and qualities ensure effective design, analysis, and innovation in material solutions while working efficiently from a remote setting.

What is the difference between Remote Materials Engineer vs Remote Mechanical Engineer?

Business Development Executive - Semiconductor Materials (Fully Remote)

Great Bay Staffing Group

Decatur, AL โ€ข Remote

$109K - $137K/yr

Full-time

Posted 21 days ago

Job description

$109,000 - $137,000 base + 8-12% annual bonus potential

Fully Remote (Nationwide) — Decatur, Alabama corporate presence

The Opportunity

You understand etching chemistry, front-end fab processes, and how to get a new material qualified inside a semiconductor customer's process. That combination is rare, and it puts you in position to own strategic accounts rather than just service them.

This role puts you at the center of qualifying etching agents into chip fabrication processes for a multi-billion dollar global chemical technology leader. You'll work the full arc of a deal: securing procurement buy-in, running cost simulations, negotiating specifications with customers' quality teams, and handing off mature accounts to sales as they become recurring business. This isn't order-taking. It's technical business development where your engineering background and industry knowledge directly determine whether a qualification succeeds.

Why You'll Love This Role

You'll operate at the intersection of chemistry, engineering, and commercial strategy. Instead of being handed a territory and a quota, you'll build relationships from the ground up with procurement and quality departments, then transition them into long-term partnerships.

The company is fully remote, giving you flexibility to run your territory from wherever you're based. Compensation includes a base up to $137,000 depending on experience, a sign-on bonus, 8-12% annual bonus potential, and a low-cost benefits package. You'll also represent the company at trade shows, technical conferences, and standards development consortiums, keeping you connected to where the industry is heading.

What Your Week Looks Like
  • Engaging directly with customers' procurement departments to advance product evaluation and qualification
  • Running cost simulations for imported product logistics and negotiating specifications with quality teams
  • Coordinating with planning, quality assurance, and production teams at the U.S. factory on material handling, logistics, and new product registration
  • Ensuring compliance with TSCA, tariffs, and chemical safety regulations
  • Communicating with parent company counterparts to keep business flow moving smoothly
  • Working alongside the sales team to strengthen and eventually transition customer relationships
  • Traveling domestically and internationally (approximately 40%) for customer visits and industry events
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in chemical or mechanical engineering, polymer science, or a related technical field from an accredited university (Master's degree a plus)
  • 5+ years of experience, 7+ preferred
  • Deep understanding of the semiconductor industry, with direct experience in sales or procurement of etching agents used in front-end chip fabrication
  • Engineering background preferred
  • Ability to travel approximately 40% of the time, domestic and international
  • Must be in current position a minimum of 6 months
Why Candidates Say Yes
  • Fully remote flexibility with a global technology leader
  • Base salary up to $137,000, plus sign-on bonus and 8-12% annual bonus potential
  • Low-cost, outstanding benefits package
  • Real ownership of accounts from initial qualification through to sales handoff
  • Direct exposure to global industry events and standards bodies shaping the semiconductor materials space

If you know the semiconductor supply chain from the inside and want to put that expertise to work with more ownership and upside, let's talk.
