What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Lean Manufacturing Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Lean Manufacturing Specialist, you need expertise in process improvement, lean methodologies (such as Six Sigma), and a background in manufacturing or industrial engineering. Familiarity with tools like value stream mapping software, ERP systems, and Lean Six Sigma certification are commonly required. Exceptional communication, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills are crucial for collaborating remotely and driving continuous improvement initiatives. These skills enable effective process optimization, cost reduction, and quality enhancement in distributed manufacturing environments.

What is remote lean manufacturing?

Remote lean manufacturing refers to the application of lean manufacturing principles—such as reducing waste, optimizing processes, and continuously improving efficiency—while working from a remote location. This often involves using digital tools, cloud-based systems, and real-time data sharing to monitor and improve manufacturing processes without being physically present at the production site. Remote lean manufacturing enables teams to collaborate, analyze production metrics, and implement improvements virtually, making it possible to maintain high efficiency and quality standards even when working off-site.

What is the difference between Remote Lean Manufacturing vs Remote Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectRemote Lean ManufacturingRemote Manufacturing Engineer
CredentialsLean certifications, manufacturing experienceEngineering degrees, technical certifications
Work EnvironmentPrimarily office or remote, focusing on process improvementRemote or on-site, focusing on product design and process development
Industry UsageManufacturing plants, process improvement teamsProduct development, production planning

Remote Lean Manufacturing focuses on streamlining production processes and implementing lean principles remotely, often working with manufacturing teams. Remote Manufacturing Engineers design and develop manufacturing processes, sometimes remotely, but with a stronger technical engineering background. While both roles support manufacturing, their core responsibilities and required skills differ, making them distinct career paths within the industry.

What are some common challenges of working in a remote Lean Manufacturing role, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in a remote Lean Manufacturing role is maintaining effective communication and collaboration with on-site teams, as Lean initiatives often require hands-on observation and immediate feedback. To overcome this, remote professionals typically leverage virtual tools such as video conferencing, real-time data dashboards, and digital workflow platforms to stay connected and monitor progress. Building strong relationships with on-site staff and establishing clear communication protocols are also crucial. Additionally, setting up regular check-ins and virtual Gemba walks can help ensure that Lean principles are consistently applied and improvements are sustained.

Job description

Our mission at Oura is to empower every person to own their inner potential. Our award-winning products help our global community gain a deeper knowledge of their readiness, activity, and sleep quality by using their Oura Ring and its connected app. We've helped millions of people understand and improve their health by providing daily insights and practical steps to inspire healthy lifestyles.
Empowering the world starts with living our values and empowering our team. As a quickly growing company focused on helping people live healthier and happier lives, we ensure that our team members have what they need to do their best work - both in and out of the office.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Process Engineer to join our US team and own process development, qualification, and continuous improvement for our current and future hardware products. You will work across all stages of the product lifecycle to improve manufacturing processes and assembly methods. You will serve as the manufacturing voice in cross-functional programs, drive process excellence at internal sites and external partners globally, and develop deep expertise in manufacturing processes for current and future products.
As a Senior Process Engineer, you feel equally comfortable working hands-on on the factory floor as you do driving Design for Manufacturability in new product development projects across all levels of leadership. You will contribute to product design through DFM work and collaborate closely with R&D Engineers, factories, and external partners as needed.
What You will do:
  • Lead process development, validation, and design transfer for consumer electronics products from EVT/DVT through PVT and mass production ramp
  • Own the process documentation suite, including assembly flow diagrams, PFMEAs, control plans, and visual work instructions
  • Conduct Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) reviews in close collaboration with mechanical and electrical engineering teams
  • Drive yield improvement and defect reduction using DOE, SPC, root cause analysis (8D, 5-Why, Ishikawa), and corrective action programs
  • Ensure manufacturing readiness, on-time execution of prototype builds, and successful factory ramp-up
  • Define process capability requirements and perform capability studies (Cp/Cpk, GR&R, MSA) for critical assembly operations
  • Apply lean manufacturing principles (value stream mapping, Kaizen, 5S, standardized work) to eliminate waste and increase throughput
  • Partner with quality engineering to establish AQL inspection standards, incoming quality criteria, and containment plans for process escapes
  • Represent manufacturing in NPI stage-gate reviews and clearly communicate readiness status to senior stakeholders

We would love to have you on our team if you have:
  • Proven track record in consumer electronics manufacturing, with hands-on experience in electronics assembly processes, automation, and factory collaboration.
  • Experience with miniaturized product design.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in complex environments with cross-functional teams, external partners, and factories.
  • Systematic and organized way of working, with a strong ability to identify and prioritize tasks.
  • Comfortable working in written and spoken English.
  • Willing and able to travel up to 25% of the time.
