What is a remote fair housing tester?

A Remote Fair Housing Tester is a person who evaluates housing providers for compliance with fair housing laws by posing as prospective renters or buyers, usually from a remote location. They help identify discriminatory practices, such as bias based on race, gender, disability, or other protected characteristics. Testers collect and report data on their experiences, which can be used in investigations or legal actions. This job often involves following specific test scripts and documenting all interactions accurately.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a remote fair housing tester?

To thrive as a Remote Fair Housing Tester, you need a strong understanding of fair housing laws, attention to detail, and typically a background in social sciences or investigative work. Familiarity with data entry tools, reporting platforms, and sometimes audio or video recording devices is important for documenting findings. Integrity, objectivity, and clear written communication are essential soft skills to ensure unbiased and accurate reporting. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively identifying housing discrimination and supporting compliance with fair housing regulations.

What are common challenges faced by remote fair housing testers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Fair Housing Testers often encounter challenges such as maintaining objectivity during interactions, accurately documenting findings, and handling potentially sensitive situations. Since testers typically work independently, they must be vigilant about following protocols and ensuring consistency across test cases. Utilizing checklists and digital tools can also help streamline reporting and maintain accuracy.

  • Evaluate units against HUD housing quality standards, identify deficiencies, and work closely with landlords and participants to resolve issues and bring properties into compliance.
  • Track failed inspections, conduct follow-up visits, review extension requests, and make recommendations regarding payment suspensions, contract cancellations, or program terminations when compliance requirements are not met.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource for program participants, helping them understand and meet their responsibilities while supporting successful participation in the Housing Choice Voucher Program.

You’ll love us because:

  • We prioritize our employees and invest in policies, benefits, and a workplace culture that supports their success.
  • You’ll join a collaborative, highly engaged team that values diverse perspectives.
  • We are a recognized leader in the affordable housing industry and take pride in the quality and impact of our work.
