What is Remote Exchange Migration?

Remote Exchange Migration refers to the process of moving email accounts, data, and settings from one Exchange server (often on-premises) to another, such as Microsoft 365 or Exchange Online, without requiring users or administrators to be physically present at the servers' locations. This migration is typically performed remotely using specialized tools and services to ensure data integrity, minimize downtime, and maintain security. Remote Exchange Migration is commonly used by organizations transitioning to cloud-based email solutions, as it enables seamless data transfer and user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Exchange Migration Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Exchange Migration Specialist, you need a strong understanding of Microsoft Exchange environments, email protocols, and experience with migration processes, often supported by relevant IT certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Exchange Server or Microsoft 365. Familiarity with tools like Exchange Admin Center, PowerShell scripting, and third-party migration utilities (e.g., Quest or BitTitan) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are essential to manage projects and support clients remotely. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure smooth, secure migrations with minimal downtime and high client satisfaction.

What is the difference between Remote Exchange Migration vs Remote Exchange Administrator?

While both roles require Microsoft Exchange certifications and knowledge of email systems, Remote Exchange Migration focuses on moving data between servers or platforms, often as a project. In contrast, Remote Exchange Administrator manages and supports the Exchange environment on an ongoing basis. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right role based on your skills and career goals.

What are some common challenges faced during remote exchange migration projects, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Exchange Migration professionals often encounter challenges such as bandwidth limitations, data integrity issues, and user downtime during mailbox transfers. To address these, it's crucial to plan migrations during off-peak hours, use robust migration tools, and communicate proactively with affected users. Collaborating closely with IT support teams and stakeholders helps ensure any issues are identified and resolved quickly, minimizing disruption and maintaining data security throughout the process.

Job description

About the Role

Antietam Technologies is looking for a Microsoft 365 Migration Engineer to join our growing managed services team. In this role, you will help clients move from on-premises environments and legacy platforms to Microsoft 365 — including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and Teams. You will work alongside senior engineers on migration tooling, tenant configuration, and end-user enablement, while taking ownership of your own migration tasks.

This role is a strong fit for someone with a couple of years of IT experience and a degree in a related field who is ready to specialize in cloud migrations and M365 administration.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in planning and executing migrations from on-premises Exchange, Google Workspace, or legacy file shares to Microsoft 365 services

• Configure and manage M365 tenant settings including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, and Microsoft Teams

• Support hybrid identity setup and Azure Active Directory (Entra ID) user provisioning

• Use migration tools such as Microsoft FastTrack, IMAP migration, SharePoint Migration Tool (SPMT), or third-party platforms (e.g., BitTitan MigrationWiz, Quest)

• Perform pre-migration assessments, including mailbox sizing, permissions audits, and DNS record reviews

• Monitor migration jobs, troubleshoot errors, and escalate complex issues to senior engineers

• Document migration runbooks, cutover plans, and post-migration validation steps

• Communicate with end users and clients during cutovers, providing clear status updates and instructions

• Assist with DNS changes, MX record cutovers, and email routing configuration

• Support post-migration tasks including license assignment, policy application, and Conditional Access baseline setup

Required Qualifications

• Must be a US Citizen

• Must currently hold a US Secret Clearance or Higher

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in M365 support, systems administration, or a related role

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (equivalent professional experience may be considered)

• Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 services: Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams

• Understanding of core email concepts: MX records, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and SMTP routing

• Familiarity with Active Directory and basic Azure AD / Entra ID concepts

• Experience working in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center and Exchange Admin Center

• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow documented processes accurately

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications

• Microsoft certifications such as MS-900 (M365 Fundamentals) or MD-102 (Endpoint Administrator) — or active pursuit of either

• Hands-on experience with a migration tool (BitTitan, SPMT, Veeam, Quest Migration Manager, etc.)

• Exposure to PowerShell scripting for M365 administration tasks

• Experience with hybrid Exchange or hybrid Azure AD join environments

• Familiarity with Microsoft Intune or Endpoint Manager basics

• Prior experience at a managed service provider (MSP) or IT consultancy

Work Environment & Schedule

This position is fully remote. Candidates must be located in the United States and authorized to work without sponsorship. You should have a reliable high-speed internet connection and a dedicated workspace free from distraction.

Standard hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM in your local time zone, with occasional evening or weekend availability required during client cutovers. Advance notice will be provided for after-hours work whenever possible.

What We Offer

• Salary range of $95,000–$115,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications

• Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance

• Paid time off, holidays, and sick leave

• Annual stipend for professional development and certification exam fees

• Mentorship from senior engineers with deep M365 and cloud expertise

• Clear career path toward senior migration engineer, M365 architect, or cloud consultant roles
