Their main tasks include recruiting new dealers, providing ongoing support and training, monitoring dealer performance, and helping dealers achieve sales and service goals. These managers use digital communication tools to stay connected with dealers, coordinate marketing initiatives, and ensure brand standards are met. They play a critical role in expanding market reach and improving overall dealer satisfaction.

How does a remote dealer development manager effectively build relationships and support dealers without frequent in-person visits?

Job description

The Team:

Upstart's Auto Sales and Dealer Operations team partners with dealerships to expand access to affordable credit through a more effective, data-informed lending experience. The team works across Sales, Relationship Management, Risk, Product, and Operations to identify the right dealer opportunities, launch new partners effectively, and help dealerships build consistent adoption of Upstart's auto lending program.

As a Remote Dealer Relationship Manager at Upstart, you will launch and manage a portfolio of lower-volume dealer partners located primarily in rural and geographically dispersed markets. You will own the dealer relationship from pre-launch preparation through ongoing adoption, engagement, and performance management.

You will build strong dealer relationships through a fully remote engagement model, using automated reporting, targeted email communication, phone outreach, and highly strategic Zoom meetings. You will identify the appropriate engagement cadence for each dealership, guide new rooftops through a successful launch, monitor dealer activity, and create practical plans to improve utilization.

While these dealerships may operate at lower monthly volumes than larger metropolitan rooftops, their collective contribution is meaningful to the organization. This role will ensure these partners receive a consistent, relevant, and high-quality experience while helping Upstart develop a scalable model for launching and supporting remote dealer relationships.

How you'll make an impact

  • Own the launch, ongoing relationship, engagement, and performance of an assigned portfolio of lower-volume, rural, and geographically dispersed dealer partners
  • Lead remote dealer launches from initial handoff through readiness, training, activation, and early adoption, coordinating system access, workflow alignment, third-party setup, and dealer-readiness requirements
  • Help dealership leadership and frontline users understand where Upstart fits within their lending strategy, establish clear adoption plans, and incorporate the program effectively into their sales and finance workflows
  • Use dealer activity and performance data, including user engagement, credit applications, offers, signed contracts, and funded loans, to identify growth opportunities, declining utilization, and accounts requiring additional support
  • Develop the appropriate engagement strategy for each dealership through targeted email and phone outreach, strategic virtual business reviews, automated reporting, and practical account plans with clear actions and follow-up commitments
  • Partner with Sales, Risk, Product, and Operations to resolve dealer barriers, escalate recurring product or process issues, maintain clear account documentation, and share insights that improve Upstart's remote dealer-management model

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in dealer relationship management, account management, customer success, dealer development, automotive retail, auto finance, indirect lending, or a related customer-facing role
  • Experience launching, onboarding, implementing, or activating new customer or dealer partnerships

  • Experience using customer or account data to identify risks, prioritize outreach, and develop adoption, growth, or recovery plans
  • Experience leading customer training, onboarding, performance reviews, or strategic meetings in a remote environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of dealership sales and finance operations, indirect auto lending, lender strategy, and dealer account-management practices
  • Ability to guide dealership leadership, finance managers, and frontline users through new lender adoption and workflow changes
  • Ability to interpret dealer performance, application, lender-activity, and utilization data to guide launch and account strategy
  • Experience building or using automated reporting, email campaigns, portfolio alerts, or customer-engagement workflows
  • Experience supporting rural, lower-volume, small-market, or geographically dispersed dealer partners and re-engaging underperforming accounts
  • Familiarity with RouteOne, Dealertrack, dealership CRM systems, credit-reporting providers, or similar automotive technology
