Job description

Location: Remote

Schedule: Alternating weekly schedule: M-F 7:00 am – 3:30 pm – flexible hours after training

Job Description:

The Coder I – Emergency Department position is responsible for accurately assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for outpatient encounters in accordance with Official Coding Guidelines, hospital policies, and regulatory requirements.  This role supports appropriate reimbursement and contributes to compliance, quality reporting, and data integrity for the Powers Health hospitals.             

 Required Skills & Qualifications:  

  • Minimum high school diploma; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Technology or Heath Information Management preferred.
  • Active AHIMA accreditation as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or recent graduates of accredited HIT/HIM program may be considered.  Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) with two (2) years coding experience in a hospital medical record setting will be considered.
  • Previous outpatient coding experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of courses in anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Thorough knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and Official Coding Guidelines.
  • Knowledge of Medicare medical necessity regulations, ABN, NCCI, OCE, and proper modifier usage preferred.
  • Knowledge of injection and infusion coding preferred.
  • Must be detail-oriented.
  • Ability to multitask, organize, and prioritize work assignments.
  • Must possess critical thinking skills to make independent decisions.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal direction, complete assignments timely and accurately.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and concisely with internal and external customers.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and SharePoint.
  • Epic EMR experience preferred.
