Position Overview

We are seeking a confident and strategic Public Affairs & Media Engagement Specialist to support university-level public affairs and media engagement initiatives. This role provides media training support, messaging guidance, press coordination, and public affairs execution aligned with Government communication objectives.

Essential Functions

Media Training & Advisory Support

  • Maintain, update, and refine media training materials in coordination with Government leads.
  • Provide coaching and advisory support to employees and students on message development, presentation skills, and effective communication techniques.
  • Assist in delivering small-group media training sessions, workshops, and practice engagements.
  • Offer structured, constructive feedback to improve participant clarity, confidence, and message delivery.
  • Support preparation of talking points, key messages, and briefing materials for individuals participating in media engagements.

Public Affairs Coordination

  • Draft and coordinate press releases, media advisories, and other public-facing communication products.
  • Develop social media content aligned with public affairs messaging and organizational priorities.
  • Assist in fielding media inquiries and coordinating responses with Government leadership.
  • Support execution of public affairs activities in alignment with established communication and engagement plans.
  • Coordinate media-related tasks for events, including press logistics, messaging alignment, and on-site support.

Communication Quality & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Ensure all public affairs materials reflect accurate, consistent messaging and adhere to organizational standards.
  • Collaborate with Government leads, program staff, and stakeholders to ensure alignment of messaging and public engagement activities.
  • Manage sensitive or high-visibility communications with professionalism and discretion.
  • Maintain organized workflows for review, approval, and dissemination of public affairs products.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Public Affairs, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field.
  • 4+ years of experience in public affairs, media relations, or strategic communications.
  • Experience drafting press releases and responding to media inquiries.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience advising leadership or stakeholders on messaging and public engagement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage sensitive or high-visibility communications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting federal or government public affairs offices.
  • Familiarity with higher education or acquisition workforce environments.
  • Experience conducting media training or executive communications coaching.
  • Knowledge of public affairs clearance and coordination processes.
