About the Team

The Science, Technology, and Medical Journals (STMJ) team at Elsevier is dedicated to making our journals a premier destination for authors. We collaborate with researchers to facilitate the publication of their impactful scientific discoveries, with a focus on rigorous peer review, ethics, and research integrity. In support of our portfolio of near 3000 hybrid and open access journals, you will actively contribute to advancing science, improving health outcomes.

The Health and Medical Sciences (HMS) portfolio includes more than 1000 journals across various medical specialties. We support and collaborate with editors, authors, reviewers and researchers worldwide, as well as supporting many high-profile journals that are owned by medical societies and associations. Our team includes publishers at various levels based around the world.

About the Role

In HMS Group 6 (HMS6), we are looking for a bright and enthusiastic Executive Publisher with responsibility to oversee a list of international proprietary and society journals, and to drive expansion of our networks, partnerships, and market share in line with the STM Journals strategy and objectives. HMS6 manages journals in areas such as cardiology, nephrology, and pathology.

The Executive Publisher has an ambassadorial role to work effectively with multiple stakeholders within the Elsevier organization, such as Operations, Global Sales, Corporate Markets, Commercial Sales, Clinical Solutions, etc. The role has a focus on executing the strategy around content development, Open Access publishing, AI opportunities, and new information product development related to the assigned subject areas. The Executive Publisher works in collaboration with other team members and in consultation with the Publishing Director to develop the strategy for the given field(s), helps develop goals, actions, and monitors progress. The Executive Publisher plays an instrumental role in developing and maintaining a network of the relevant stakeholders and decision makers within the relevant subject area. The role manages and develops an assigned portfolio of journals and related products and services on a highly complex level. The Executive Publisher has a proven track record of demonstrating the ability to work independently and is a lead example to and a coach/mentor for Senior Publishers, Publishers, and Associate Publishers and takes part in STMJ projects.

Any applicant needs to have a good educational background and keen interest in academic publishing; excellent communication skills; and would have to be prepared to work independently while also contributing to team initiatives as necessary.

To excel in this position, you understand the importance of maintaining a strong network both with and beyond current Elsevier editors, authors, and societies. The role balances academic research knowledge with a keen interest in new developments, as well as a strong sense for relationship management. You should also be able to work across teams with our STMJ Centers of Expertise as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Staying up to date with market developments, to identify and map market needs and business opportunities. (Market awareness);

  • Combining market knowledge and data analysis, develop a portfolio strategy that will deliver on STMJ targets and ensure your portfolio remains fully competitive. Experience in data gathering, presentation, and interpretation essential. (Portfolio strategy);

  • Managing content growth organically and by (title) acquisition as well as managing innovation of content formats and content extensions and channels. (Portfolio development)

  • Negotiating and managing contractual relationships with journal editors;

  • Managing the editorial fees budget and providing input to pricing processes;

  • Staying in close contact with editors and editorial boards within journal portfolio, and engage with stakeholders across the research communities, including research institutes, societies, and funding bodies. (Relationship building);

  • Participating in projects that are run across STMJ and contribute to projects within Elsevier that require STMJ representation. This could be relevant for the particular department, related to a pilot for a new product, service or business model or even to improving certain processes within our organization.

Requirements

  • Have a university degree;

  • Have relevant STM publishing experience, including experience in open access and working with societies, with a proven track record of realizing goals, and of making a difference to a program;

  • Display excellent networking and communication skills in English;

  • Able to adapt to change, handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously, and work equally well collaboratively or independently with colleagues and customers at different levels, in different locations, and from different cultures, in a deadline-oriented environment;

  • Are data-driven mindset and a keen interest in new online developments;

  • Have financial and commercial awareness, with strategic awareness and eye for business development;

  • Are results-oriented with a strong can-do attitude;

  • Have willingness to travel.

Primary Location Base Pay Range: New York, NY $114,300 - $190,500. U.S. National Base Pay Range: $95,300 - $158,800. Geographic differentials may apply in some locations to better reflect local market rates. This job is eligible for an annual incentive bonus.
