Position Overview


The Commercial Construction Plumbing Apprentice supports Journeyman plumbers and project teams in the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems on commercial construction projects. This position is ideal for individuals seeking to establish a career in the plumbing trade while receiving hands on training in a fast-paced construction environment.


The apprentice will learn industry best practices, plumbing codes, safety standards, blueprint reading, material handling, and installation techniques while assisting with the construction of schools, healthcare facilities, office buildings, retail centers, multi-family developments, industrial facilities, and other commercial projects.


Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong work ethic, willingness to learn, commitment to safety, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Requirements

Plumbing Installation Support

  • Assist licensed plumbers with the installation of commercial plumbing systems, including:
    • Domestic water systems
    • Sanitary waste and vent systems
    • Storm drainage systems
    • Natural gas piping systems
    • Medical gas systems (where applicable)
    • Specialty piping systems
  • Measure, cut, thread, assemble, and install piping materials under supervision.
  • Assist with rough-in and finish plumbing installations.
  • Help install plumbing fixtures, equipment, valves, pumps, and accessories.
  • Support underground plumbing installation activities.
  • Assist with testing and inspection procedures.


Construction Site Responsibilities

  • Transport tools, materials, and equipment throughout job sites.
  • Prepare work areas and maintain clean, organized job sites.
  • Load and unload construction materials safely.
  • Assist in identifying and resolving installation challenges.
  • Work collaboratively with project managers, foremen, journeymen, and other trades.


Learning and Development

  • Participate in apprenticeship training programs and classroom instruction.
  • Learn applicable plumbing codes, regulations, and construction standards.
  • Develop blueprint and specification reading skills.
  • Gain proficiency in plumbing tools, equipment, and installation techniques.
  • Seek feedback and mentorship from supervisors and experienced plumbers.


Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all OSHA, company, and jobsite safety requirements.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Participate in safety meetings and toolbox talks.
  • Maintain a safe and hazard-free work environment.
  • Report unsafe conditions immediately.


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in a construction environment.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Reliable transportation to various job sites.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screening requirements.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous construction or trade experience.
  • Enrollment in or interest in a plumbing apprenticeship program.
  • Basic knowledge of hand and power tools.
  • OSHA 10 Certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving abilities.


Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb.
  • Work in varying weather conditions and construction environments.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and elevated work platforms.
  • Perform repetitive motions involving hands, wrists, and arms.


Work Environment

  • Commercial construction sites.
  • Indoor and outdoor work environments.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, temperature variations, and active construction operations.
  • May require occasional overtime, weekends, or travel to project locations.


Employees must be able to pass pre-employment screening including a background, motor vehicle check and drug screening. Maintaining eligibility to operate company vehicles is a fundamental job requirement. All employees that operate company vehicles must maintain their driving record as insurable under the company's vehicle insurance provider.
