Reporting to the Senior Vice President & Head of Self-Storage, this role serves as the senior engineering leader responsible for translating product strategy into scalable, secure, and high-performing technical solutions across the Self-Storage portfolio.

The Director of Engineering will lead engineering execution across product development, architecture, platform reliability, engineering operations, technical standards, and delivery excellence while building a scalable engineering organization capable of supporting continued growth, innovation, and future acquisitions.

This role operates as the primary owner of "how we build, deliver, scale, and support" technology solutions across the business while partnering closely with Product Management, Cloud Operations, Technical Support, Supply Chain, Commercial, and Finance.

Key Responsibilities in Your Role...

The Director of Engineering is responsible for building and leading a high-performing Engineering organization focused on execution excellence, technical scalability, operational reliability, and innovation delivery.

Engineering Leadership & Technical Execution

  • Lead the Engineering organization across software, firmware, hardware, cloud platform, and technical architecture disciplines

  • ย Drive engineering execution and delivery across the full product development lifecycle
  • Ensure alignment between Product roadmap priorities and Engineering execution plans
  • Establish engineering operating rhythms, delivery accountability, and execution discipline across teams
  • Lead technical planning, resource prioritization, and delivery coordination across concurrent initiatives
  • Ensure engineering teams deliver scalable, secure, reliable, and commercially viable solutions
  • Partner closely with Product Management leadership to align customer needs, business priorities, and technical execution

Architecture, Platform Reliability, & Scalability

  • Establish and maintain scalable technical architecture standards across cloud, firmware, hardware, and connected platform ecosystems

  • Drive platform stability, reliability, performance, and operational scalability across customer-facing systems
  • Partner with Cloud Operations and Technical Support teams to improve uptime, monitoring, observability, and incident response maturity
  • Ensure engineering decisions support long-term maintainability, security, and operational efficiency
  • Lead technical debt prioritization and platform modernization initiatives
  • Support business continuity, cybersecurity readiness, and engineering risk mitigation efforts

Product Development & Delivery Excellence

  • Lead Engineering execution for new product introduction (NPI), platform enhancements, and strategic innovation initiatives
  • Partner with Product Management to establish delivery priorities, release planning, and technical feasibility assessments
  • Ensure effective engineering participation in roadmap planning, estimation, and release readiness activities
  • Drive accountability for engineering milestones, quality standards, and release execution
  • Establish engineering best practices across development workflows, testing, documentation, and deployment activities
  • Improve development velocity, predictability, and release quality through disciplined engineering management

Cross-Functional Alignment & Organizational Partnership

  • Collaborate closely with Product Management, Technical Support, Cloud Operations, Supply Chain, Commercial, and Customer Success teams
  • Support cross-functional prioritization decisions balancing customer impact, technical complexity, operational readiness, and business value
  • Partner with Technical Support teams to improve escalation management, root-cause analysis, and customer issue resolution
  • Support operational readiness for product launches, deployments, and platform updates
  • Serve as a senior technical advisor across the business area

Experience Requirements (years can overlap)

  • 10+ years of experience in Engineering leadership across software, cloud, hardware, firmware, or connected technology environments
  • 5+ years of experience leading Engineering teams and technical leaders within a scaling organization
  • Experience leading engineering execution across cloud-based platforms, IoT-enabled products, SaaS environments, or integrated hardware/software ecosystems
  • Experience partnering closely with Product Management organizations within a product-led operating model
  • Proven experience driving engineering scalability, platform reliability, and technical delivery execution
  • Experience establishing engineering processes, standards, and operational maturity across growing organizations
  • Exposure to NPI/Gateway processes, product lifecycle management, and release governance
  • Experience supporting technical due diligence, integration planning, or acquisition-related engineering activities preferred
  • Strong organizational, communication, analytical, and leadership skills
