What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Program Scheduler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Scheduler, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a background in project management or scheduling, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency in scheduling software such as Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, or similar tools is typically required, and certifications like PMI-SP can be advantageous. Excellent communication, time management, and problem-solving abilities help you effectively coordinate with diverse teams and adapt to shifting project demands. These skills ensure projects stay on schedule, resources are efficiently allocated, and stakeholders remain informed, which is critical for successful project delivery.

How does a Program Scheduler typically collaborate with project managers and other team members to ensure timelines are met?

Program Schedulers work closely with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to develop and maintain detailed schedules for projects or programs. They frequently attend coordination meetings, gather updates on task progress, and adjust schedules as needed to address delays or changes in project scope. Effective communication is key, as Program Schedulers must relay scheduling risks or conflicts promptly and help teams prioritize critical tasks. This collaborative approach ensures that project milestones are met and resources are allocated efficiently.

What does a Program Scheduler do?

A Program Scheduler is responsible for creating and managing timelines for projects or programs within an organization. They coordinate tasks, set deadlines, and ensure that all activities are on track to meet project goals. Program Schedulers work closely with project managers, team members, and stakeholders to monitor progress and address any scheduling conflicts or delays. Their role is essential for keeping projects organized and ensuring they are completed on time and within budget.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A program scheduler typically earns less than $10,000 a month, but some high-level project managers or specialized consultants in industries like IT or construction can reach that income level without a degree, often relying on extensive experience, certifications, and strong organizational skills. These roles may involve managing complex schedules, budgets, and teams, and often require proficiency with scheduling software and industry knowledge.

What is the difference between Program Scheduler vs Project Coordinator?

AspectProgram SchedulerProject Coordinator
CredentialsTypically requires scheduling certifications, project management experienceOften requires organizational or administrative certifications
Work EnvironmentWorks across multiple projects within a program, often in construction, IT, or engineeringSupports individual projects, coordinating tasks and resources
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in construction, government, engineering, and IT sectorsWidely used in corporate, healthcare, and non-profit sectors

While both roles involve coordination and scheduling, a Program Scheduler manages schedules across multiple projects within a program, ensuring alignment and resource allocation. A Project Coordinator focuses on supporting specific projects, handling day-to-day tasks. The Program Scheduler's role is broader, requiring advanced scheduling skills and experience with multiple projects, whereas the Project Coordinator's role is more administrative and task-focused.

Job description

Position Overview

Verity Integrated Systems is seeking an experienced Integrated Master Scheduler (IMS) to support advanced Department of Defense (DoD) prototype and engineering development programs. This position is responsible for developing, integrating, maintaining, and analyzing Integrated Master Schedules (IMS) from the ground up using Microsoft Project within an Earned Value Management (EVM) environment.

The ideal candidate has direct experience building executable schedules for complex defense acquisition, engineering development, manufacturing, integration, and test programs-not simply maintaining administrative schedules. This individual will work directly with program managers, engineering teams, subcontractors, finance, manufacturing, and leadership to drive execution discipline and provide clear visibility into program status, risks, and critical path activities.

This is a high-visibility role supporting fast-paced prototype and operational capability development efforts where execution speed, integration discipline, and schedule realism are critical.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain Integrated Master Schedules (IMS) from scratch using Microsoft Project
  • Develop logic-driven, resource-informed schedules aligned to program execution strategy
  • Integrate engineering, software, manufacturing, procurement, integration, supplier, test, and delivery activities into a single executable master schedule
  • Establish and maintain:
    • Task dependencies
    • Critical path analysis
    • Schedule margin
    • Milestones
    • Constraints
    • Schedule health metrics
  • Coordinate directly with Integrated Product Teams (IPTs), technical leads, subcontractors, and program leadership to ensure schedule accuracy and execution alignment
  • Facilitate schedule working groups and execution reviews across functional teams
  • Identify schedule conflicts, integration gaps, execution bottlenecks, and emerging risks early
  • Support Earned Value Management (EVM) activities including:
    • Baseline development
    • Schedule status updates
    • Variance analysis
    • Schedule performance tracking
    • Critical path assessments
  • Support schedule baseline control, configuration management, and disciplined change management processes
  • Integrate subcontractor and supplier schedules into the master program schedule
  • Track procurement timelines, long-lead material risks, and manufacturing dependencies
  • Support program reviews including:
    • SRR
    • PDR
    • CDR
    • TRR
    • Flight/Test Readiness Reviews
    • Technical interchange meetings
  • Develop executive-level schedule products, milestone charts, risk summaries, and program status visuals
  • Present schedule status, execution risks, and recovery recommendations to senior leadership and government stakeholders
  • Support proposal development activities including:
    • Program execution timelines
    • Staffing ramps
    • Milestone planning
    • Basis of Estimate (BOE) support
  • Assist with development of scalable scheduling and program control processes as the organization grows

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, Engineering, Program Management, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of experience supporting DoD programs as an Integrated Master Scheduler, Program Scheduler, or Program Controls professional
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining an Integrated Master Schedule (IMS) from scratch
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Project
  • Experience supporting Earned Value Management (EVM) programs
  • Experience supporting engineering development, integration, manufacturing, or flight/test programs
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Critical path methodology
    • Schedule logic development
    • Dependency management
    • Milestone planning
    • Schedule risk analysis
    • Baseline control
  • Experience coordinating across engineering, manufacturing, software, integration, and supplier organizations
  • Ability to facilitate schedule discussions and challenge unrealistic execution timelines constructively
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to brief both technical teams and senior leadership
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced small business environment with evolving processes
  • U.S. Citizenship required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance
  • Experience supporting prototype, OTA, hypersonic, missile, aviation, or space programs
  • Experience integrating subcontractor and supplier schedules
  • Familiarity with:
    • DCMA schedule assessment principles
    • Integrated Baseline Reviews (IBR)
    • Schedule health metrics
    • Government program reporting on environments
  • Experience supporting Agile or hybrid hardware/software development efforts
  • Experience with:
    • Power BI
    • Advanced Excel reporting and analytics
    • Schedule visualization/dashboarding tools
  • Experience supporting proposal development and capture activities

Desired Characteristics

  • Self-starter capable of building structures in a rapidly growing organization
  • Comfortable operating with limited overhead support and high accountability
  • Technically curious and capable of understanding engineering and integration workflows
  • Able to drive cross-functional execution discipline without excessive bureaucracy
  • Strong attention to detail while maintaining focus on overall program objectives
  • Comfortable engaging directly with leadership, customers, engineers, suppliers, and operational personnel
  • Execution-oriented mindset focused on solving problems and maintaining program momentum
