What is the difference between Program Management vs Project Management?
| Aspect | Program Management | Project Management |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Oversees multiple related projects to achieve strategic objectives | Manages individual projects to meet specific goals |
| Scope | Broader, involving multiple projects and stakeholders | Narrower, focused on specific deliverables |
| Responsibilities | Aligns projects with organizational strategy, manages interdependencies | Plans, executes, and closes individual projects |
| Certifications | PMP, PgMP often preferred | PMP commonly required |
While both roles require strong organizational and leadership skills, program management focuses on coordinating multiple projects to achieve strategic goals, whereas project management concentrates on delivering specific project outcomes efficiently.

About the Role
The Program Manager I is responsible for leading a program and has overall responsibility and authority for that program/contract's cost, schedule, and technical performance. This role involves comprehensive program planning, execution, and resource management to ensure successful program outcomes. They will have a proven record of successful program management execution, in-depth knowledge across all facets of program management, and proficiency in financial and performance metrics analysis. The Program Manager I will collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve program objectives and develop and initiate Learning & Development programs. This position offers the opportunity to work on complex projects, stay updated with the latest industry trends, and contribute to the continuous improvement of program management processes.
In this role, you will lead a program and have overall responsibility and authority for its cost, schedule, and technical performance, while being accountable for a program, Integrated Product Team (IPT), or portfolio of programs valued at less than $50M. You will manage and integrate multiple project outputs, handle program-level risks and issues, and ensure budget, schedule, and execution remain within contractual requirements. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining comprehensive program plans, schedules, and budgets, monitoring performance, and implementing corrective actions as needed to meet objectives. You will leverage program management training in EVMS, CAM, BOE, FAR, and CAS, as well as advanced project management methodologies and tools, to ensure program success. Additionally, you will analyze financial and performance metrics to drive decisions and improvements, collaborate with cross-functional teams such as engineering, finance, supply chain, and operations, and communicate program status, risks, and issues to stakeholders and team members. You will prepare and deliver effective reports and presentations, ensure compliance with all contractual and regulatory requirements, and foster strong relationships with external customers and stakeholders. Furthermore, you will develop and initiate Learning & Development programs to enhance team capabilities, apply problem-solving skills to address challenges, and lead a single program, an IPT, or a portfolio of programs. This role involves external customer-facing, end-to-end responsibility.
