What are Production Operations Engineers?

Production Operations Engineers are professionals who oversee and optimize the processes involved in manufacturing or service delivery to ensure efficient, reliable, and safe operations. They monitor production systems, troubleshoot issues, implement improvements, and coordinate with other teams to maintain seamless workflow. Their role often includes maintaining equipment, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and using data analytics to enhance productivity and minimize downtime.

What are some common challenges faced by Production Operations Engineers, and how can they prepare to address them?

Production Operations Engineers often encounter challenges such as responding to unexpected system outages, balancing multiple priorities during high-pressure incidents, and ensuring seamless coordination with development and IT teams. To address these, it's helpful to develop strong troubleshooting skills, maintain clear documentation, and practice effective communication across departments. Proactively learning about the organization's infrastructure and staying updated on best practices can also help engineers respond efficiently to operational issues and contribute to continuous process improvements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Production Operations Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Production Operations Engineer, you need strong problem-solving skills, a solid understanding of production processes, and a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with manufacturing execution systems (MES), automation tools, and lean manufacturing certifications like Six Sigma are typically beneficial. Excellent teamwork, communication, and analytical thinking help you collaborate effectively and quickly address production challenges. These skills ensure efficient operations, minimize downtime, and drive continuous improvement in production environments.

What does a production operations engineer do?

A production operations engineer is responsible for managing and optimizing manufacturing or production processes to ensure efficiency, quality, and safety. They often analyze data, troubleshoot equipment issues, and implement process improvements, frequently using tools like automation systems and process control software. This role may require technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and knowledge of industry standards and safety regulations.

Achieving this level typically requires extensive experience, advanced skills, and sometimes leadership roles or specialized certifications.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often involves working in high-demand industries, holding managerial or executive positions, or possessing rare technical expertise and certifications.

Is 40 too late to be an engineer?

Age is not a barrier to becoming a Production Operations Engineer or any engineering role. Many engineers start their careers later in life, and success depends on skills, experience, and continuous learning, such as gaining relevant certifications or technical knowledge. Employers value practical expertise and problem-solving abilities regardless of age.

We are committed to fostering a healthy work-life balance and building meaningful connections, ensuring you have the tools, resources, and support needed to excel in any environment. Together, we'll unlock your potential and create a lasting impact.
While this is the current structure and we currently have no plans to change, we reserve the right to make changes to the hybrid schedule as needed at the Company's discretion.
Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. The company does not intend to provide sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B, TN, etc.) for this employment position.
What You Will Do:
  • Partner with internal and global IT teams to deploy, monitor, troubleshoot, and improve application deployments

  • Proactively improve site reliability and operational SLAs (e.g., uptime, performance, time to resolution, and incident response)

  • Build tools and automation to standardize and accelerate build, release, scaling, and operational processes

  • Design and implement software-defined infrastructure using cloud standards and best practices

  • Implement monitoring, alerting, analytics, and dashboards to improve observability and stakeholder visibility

  • Work with partner teams (IT, global cloud operations, information security, and product engineering) to resolve cloud infrastructure and delivery issues

  • Build strong relationships with development teams to understand the code, dependencies, and runtime infrastructure

  • Act as a point of contact between Global Architecture, Cloud Operations, and Front Office Delivery teams within Allegion IT

  • Drive initiatives to streamline operations and maximize availability; resolve complex problems that extend beyond your immediate area

  • Evaluate and experiment with emerging cloud technologies to determine suitability and use cases

What You Need to Succeed:
  • Hands-on experience creating and maintaining environments using Microsoft Azure services
  • 7 + years of experience relevant to the capabilities of the position

  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines and implementing build and deployment automation (e.g., Azure DevOps, Jenkins)

  • Experience with observability: analytics, continuous health monitoring, alerting, and troubleshooting in 24/7 environments

  • Experience with distributed systems and cloud infrastructure (Azure)

  • Working knowledge of DevOps and SRE concepts, including performance, load, and security testing strategies

  • Strong scripting skills (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Ruby) and source control experience (Git)

  • Comfortable working in Agile/Scrum development processes

  • Understanding of application architectures, design patterns, and web/mobile deployment methodologies

  • Strong debugging skills, sound judgment, and ability to assess risk and act with urgency

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; collaborative and adaptable working style

Preferred (Nice to have):
  • Experience with Linux/Unix administration and shell scripting

  • Experience with containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation)

  • Experience with non-Azure cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud Platform)

  • Familiarity with code quality and security scanning tools (e.g., SonarQube)
