The primary purpose of this position is to support lower premium agencies in order to grow Markel business. The ABD will be responsible for enhancing agency relationships and increasing premium production through educating and forging strong partnerships with assigned agents. This role requires employees to drive on a regular basis. Employees in this position are expected to maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable DMV Motor Vehicle Record which will be pulled on an annual basis for verification.

This position is an associate-level, production-based desk assignment based in our regional office in Denver, CO, with occasional travel within assigned region(s). It is mainly designed to develop into a Business Development Specialist role with an ability to relocate.

Responsibilities:

  • Execute on Markel's business plan for assigned region; provide regular feedback on relationships, product, and marketplace

  • Focus on the distribution of Small Commercial products with working knowledge of Markel's broader product suite

  • Work with assigned agencies to keep Markel top of mind, maintain existing book of business, and write new business as opportunities are identified. This will mainly be accomplished through outgoing production phone calls and virtual meetings with agents

  • Achieve weekly production/virtual meeting target as set by leadership

  • Quarterly travel to visit agencies in assigned region(s) to be self-scheduled and independently managed

  • Develop product and organizational knowledge to provide accurate advice to customers

  • Develop and implement strategic plans to drive profitable premium growth and retention for new and current partnerships

  • Prepare reporting on results to ensure business planning targets are met.

  • Collaborate with regional business development team to plan and underwriting production teams

  • This may include, but is not limited to, agent onboarding and training (including system and appetite training), entering accounts into a Markel proprietary system, quote follow-ups, goal setting and accountability with producers, learn and navigate small commercial marketplace in region, and agency terminations

  • Work closely with Business Development Specialists to provide day-to-day support.

  • Help resolve agent issues with coordination with other departments

  • Represent Markel at various conventions and events

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience with some college coursework is preferred.

  • 1 year of insurance experience preferred;

  • Demonstrated ability to stay focused and productive without constant supervision

  • Highly self-driven with a strong sense of accountability and goal orientation

  • Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills;

  • Ability to multi-task in fast-paced environment;

  • Ability to work independently and within a team;

  • Ability to follow process and attention to details;

  • Intermediate level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Adherence to the Markel flex schedule: 3 days (at minimum) in office and 2 remote

The hourly rate offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure,demonstratedcompetencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national averagehourlyrange for theAssociate Business Development Specialistis $27.84/hr- $38.27/hr with 15% incentive.
