Job description

Position: Process Control Manager

Job Code: MEPCM4 + Mgr II, Process Control

The Opportunity

The Manager, Process Control, serves as the direct leader and technical authority for the Process Control Systems Group at Evadale paper mill. This position reports to the Technical Manager and is a key member of the Production Services leadership team. The Manager is responsible for overseeing all Process Control systems throughout the mill, directing departmental personnel, and driving continuous improvement in the systems and processes under their care. In this role, you will lead capital project execution, ensure the safety and development of your team, and serve as the primary point of coordination between Process Control and other mill departments. Your leadership will directly impact safety, environmental performance, quality, cost, and productivity across the facility.

How you will impact Smurfit Westrock Safety leadership responsibilities include
  • Follows and adheres to all safety policies and procedures, and ensures all employees are aware of and comply with mill safety requirements.
  • Ensures timely completion of accident and incident investigations as needed.
  • Actively promotes and participates in the mill’s safety programs and processes.
  • Conducts routine safety audits of employees to ensure compliance and provides proper coaching and feedback.
Primary management responsibilities include
  • Provides direct supervision of all Process Control Systems and Process Control Department personnel.
  • Oversees all Process Control systems throughout the mill to ensure reliable and optimized performance.
  • Leads the successful completion of capital projects related to control systems and process equipment connected to control systems.
  • Drives continuous improvement within mill processes that are controlled or monitored by the Process Control group.
  • Sets goals and responsibilities for direct reports; conducts IPPE evaluations and provides ongoing performance feedback throughout the year.
  • Ensures training needs of subordinates are identified and met; supports professional development and goal setting for all direct reports.
  • Participates in product, quality, and cost improvement projects across the mill.
Related responsibilities include
  • Coordinates and communicates Process Control efforts with other mill departments to ensure alignment and operational continuity.
  • Takes on‑call responsibilities as the Process Control Engineer (DCS) as required.
  • Responsible for conducting business with integrity and respect, maintaining accountability, and actively pursuing excellence.
  • Position requires less than 10% travel.
What you need to succeed
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Electrical or Chemical disciplines preferred).
  • 10+ years’ experience in process control, automation, or related field, including large-scale system upgrades; paper industry experience is a plus.
  • 5+ years’ supervisory or management experience leading technical teams.
  • Direct experience with Honeywell, Delta V, or Metso/Valmet DCS platforms is a plus.
  • Strong project management skills with demonstrated ability to lead capital projects from planning through execution.
  • Ability to build effective cross‑functional working relationships and communicate clearly across all levels of the organization.
  • Strong knowledge of networks, DCS platforms, PLC systems, and associated computer software.
  • Self‑driven, strong work ethic, and positive attitude.
