General Manager - Shipping, Printing, & Business Services

Appalachian Postal

Knoxville, TN • On-site

$20 - $28/hr

Full-time

PTO

This job post has expired today. Applications are no longer accepted.

Job description

An established shipping, printing, mailbox, and business services company serving the Farragut/West Knoxville area is seeking an energetic, customer-focused General Manager to lead daily operations while helping drive future growth. This is an opportunity to help lead an established business with a loyal customer base while playing a key role in its continued growth and success.

This is not a traditional retail management position. We are looking for someone who enjoys taking ownership, solving problems, leading people, serving customers, and helping build a successful small business. The right candidate will be empowered to make decisions, improve operations, identify new opportunities, and work directly with ownership to continue growing the business.

To be considered, please submit a resume and a brief cover letter describing your management philosophy, what interests you about this position, and why you believe you’d be a strong fit. Professional references will be requested from finalists.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Compensation: $20.00-$28.00 per hour, depending on qualifications, experience, and demonstrated ability.
  • Performance-based bonus and incentive opportunities.
  • Six paid holidays annually.
  • One-week paid vacation after six months of employment.
  • Additional benefits may be offered as the business continues to grow.
  • Paid training, including company-paid travel when required.
  • Opportunity for advancement and professional growth.
  • Work directly with ownership in shaping the future of the business.

Schedule

This is a full-time position. The General Manager will generally work Monday through Friday during normal business hours, with occasional evenings, Saturdays, and additional hours as business needs require. Flexibility is important, as small business operations occasionally require schedule adjustments, community networking events, or additional support during busy periods.

Position Summary

The General Manager is responsible for the daily operations of the business, customer satisfaction, employee supervision, sales growth, and operational excellence. This position requires a hands-on leader who is comfortable wearing many hats and thrives in a fast-paced small business environment where no two days are exactly alike. The successful candidate will be equally confident serving customers at the front counter, leading employees, solving operational challenges, and helping identify opportunities for business growth.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operation of the business.
  • Supervise, train, and support store employees.
  • Open and close the store as needed.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service.
  • Process and oversee domestic and international shipping transactions.
  • Assist customers with mailbox rentals, printing, copying, notary services, marketing materials, and other business services.
  • Prepare quotes and coordinate print, promotional product, and graphic design orders.
  • Create and edit customer documents, marketing materials, and print-ready artwork using Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Canva, and similar software.
  • Maintain inventory and ensure the store is clean, organized, and professionally presented.
  • Resolve customer concerns professionally and independently.
  • Participate in networking events and community outreach.
  • Identify opportunities to improve operations, expand services, and increase revenue.
  • Work directly with ownership to help grow the business.
  • Recruit, interview, onboard, and mentor employees as the business grows.
  • Ensure compliance with company standards and operating procedures.
  • Protect confidential customer and business information.
  • Assist ownership with operational planning and business development initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with repeat customers, commercial clients, and community organizations, and referral partners.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous management or supervisory experience.
  • Experience in printing, shipping, marketing, business services, retail management, or a related field.
  • Experience with, or the ability to quickly learn:
    • Microsoft Office
    • Adobe Acrobat
    • Canva or similar software used to create customer-ready print materials, marketing pieces, and document layouts.
  • Experience preparing marketing materials, business cards, brochures, flyers, signage, or promotional products is a plus.
  • Ability to learn new software and technology quickly.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who thinks like an owner—not someone who simply waits to be told what to do.

The ideal candidate:

  • Is trustworthy and demonstrates unquestioned integrity.
  • Is dependable, punctual, and has excellent attendance.
  • Takes initiative without constant supervision.
  • Is friendly, outgoing, and genuinely enjoys working with people.
  • Communicates professionally with customers, vendors, and coworkers.
  • Can remain calm under pressure and resolve difficult customer situations.
  • Is organized and able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Is comfortable making independent day-to-day decisions.
  • Has a strong work ethic and isn’t afraid to jump in wherever needed.
  • Leads by example.
  • Is adaptable and enjoys learning new skills.
  • Sees problems before they’re pointed out.
  • Offers solutions rather than excuses.
  • Takes pride in delivering exceptional customer experiences.
  • Understands that no task is “beneath them.”
  • Treats company resources responsibly and takes ownership of results.
  • Exercises sound judgment and maintains professionalism even under pressure.

What Success Looks Like

After your first year, a successful General Manager will have:

  • Built strong relationships with our customers.
  • Developed an efficient and well-trained team.
  • Identified opportunities to grow revenue and improve operations.
  • Earned the confidence of ownership through sound judgment and initiative.
  • Helped create an exceptional customer experience every day.
  • Contributed to measurable growth in commercial accounts and overall business revenue.

Opportunities for Growth

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help shape the future of the business by contributing ideas, improving processes, expanding services, developing commercial relationships, and helping drive long-term growth. Initiative, creativity, and leadership are encouraged and valued.

Why Join Us?

We believe exceptional customer service, professionalism, integrity, and initiative are the foundation of a successful small business. We value employees who take ownership of their work, continuously look for ways to improve, and enjoy contributing to a collaborative team environment.

This is an opportunity to become a key leader in a growing locally owned business where your ideas, initiative, and leadership will truly make a difference. You’ll have the chance to help shape the future of the business rather than simply maintain it.

We’re looking for someone interested in building a career and growing with the business. If you’re motivated, dependable, customer-focused, and excited about helping lead and grow a successful local business, we’d love to hear from you.

We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and consider all qualified applicants without regard to protected status under applicable law.

Final candidates will be required to successfully complete a background check and drug screening prior to employment.
