This role ensures the effective delivery of law enforcement, security, and crime prevention services to protect patients, staff, visitors, and property. The position oversees training, compliance, and operational standards while promoting a service-oriented approach that balances public safety with compassion and professionalism in a healthcare environment.

The Manager, Police

  • Manages operations of the Police and Security division within Carilion Clinic.
  • Directs work and evaluates performance of police, security, and support staff.
  • Plans and coordinates patrol activities across assigned districts.
  • Assigns duties to police officers and maintains post assignments for security staff.
  • Develops and manages departmental budgets, including monthly financial and operational reporting.
  • Conducts inspections of staff, equipment, and police vehicles to ensure readiness and compliance.
  • Communicates and enforces departmental policies and procedures, including updates and changes.
  • Promotes community-oriented policing by fostering positive relationships with staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Supports departmental initiatives aligned with community policing principles.
  • Maintains a positive work environment and supports staff engagement and development.
  • Collaborates with internal departments, including hospital administration, to support safety and security operations.

What We Require:

Education: Bachelor's degree required; 4 years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.


Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in criminal justice or a related field required, including progressively increasing management responsibility and at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role. Advanced leadership training preferred.


Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration: Must meet Virginia minimum training standards for law enforcement officers and hold current certification as a law enforcement officer in Virginia through the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), or be eligible for recertification within 2 years of certification lapse through an approved DCJS in-service program. Must meet Virginia DCJS Private Security Section minimum standards for security officer registration. Valid Virginia driver's license required.


Other Minimum Qualifications: Must be at least 21 years of age in accordance with Virginia state law. Strong oral and written communication skills required to interact with diverse populations. Proficiency in computer keyboarding and working knowledge of Microsoft Windows applications required.
