What types of hands-on experience can I expect during a Physiotherapy Internship?

During a Physiotherapy Internship, you can expect to assist licensed physiotherapists with patient assessments, treatment planning, and the implementation of rehabilitation exercises. Interns often observe and participate in therapy sessions, help document patient progress, and may interact with patients under supervision. You’ll also gain exposure to different clinical environments, such as hospitals or outpatient clinics, and work closely with interdisciplinary teams, which is invaluable for developing both your clinical and communication skills.

What other jobs can I do with a physio degree?

These positions often require knowledge of anatomy, patient care, and sometimes additional certifications or licenses, and they typically involve working in clinics, hospitals, or sports settings.

What is a physiotherapy internship?

A physiotherapy internship is a supervised work experience program for students or recent graduates in the field of physiotherapy. It allows interns to apply their academic knowledge in real clinical settings, interact with patients, and learn from experienced physiotherapists. Interns gain practical skills in patient assessment, treatment planning, and hands-on therapy techniques. This experience is often a requirement for graduation or professional licensing and helps interns develop confidence and competence before starting their careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Physiotherapy Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Physiotherapy Intern, you need foundational knowledge of human anatomy, physiotherapy techniques, and a relevant academic background, typically from ongoing or completed studies in physiotherapy. Familiarity with physiotherapy equipment, patient management software, and basic assessment tools is valuable. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and a willingness to learn help interns connect with patients and collaborate effectively with senior staff. These skills ensure safe, effective care and support professional growth in a clinical environment.

What does a physical therapy intern do?

A physical therapy intern assists licensed therapists in evaluating and treating patients with mobility, pain, or injury issues. They observe, support therapy sessions, and may help with exercises, documentation, and patient education under supervision.
