What is a respiratory therapy internship?

A Respiratory Therapy Internship is a supervised training program for students or recent graduates who are pursuing a career as respiratory therapists. During the internship, participants gain hands-on clinical experience in areas such as patient assessment, airway management, and the use of respiratory equipment. This practical experience is essential for developing the skills and knowledge required to provide effective respiratory care to patients with breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders. Internships often take place in hospitals or healthcare facilities and are typically required for graduation from accredited respiratory therapy programs.

What types of hands-on experiences can I expect during a respiratory therapy internship?

During a Respiratory Therapy Internship, you can expect to work closely with experienced therapists in both acute and chronic care settings. Typical responsibilities include assisting with patient assessments, administering respiratory treatments, learning how to operate ventilators, and documenting patient progress. You may also participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and gain exposure to emergency procedures, providing a well-rounded introduction to the field. These experiences are designed to build your clinical confidence and prepare you for a full-time role after graduation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a respiratory therapy intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Respiratory Therapy Intern, you need foundational knowledge in respiratory care principles, human anatomy, and current enrollment in or completion of an accredited respiratory therapy program. Familiarity with pulmonary function testing equipment, ventilators, and electronic medical records is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability are important soft skills for interacting with patients and collaborating with healthcare teams. These skills ensure interns provide safe, effective care while learning and contributing in clinical environments.
