What is a respiratory therapy intern?

A respiratory therapy intern is a student or entry-level professional gaining practical experience in respiratory care under supervision. They assist with patient assessments, equipment, and treatments in healthcare settings, often while completing certification requirements such as the CRT or RRT exams.

Is 22 too old for an internship?

Respiratory therapy internships are open to individuals of various ages, including those in their early twenties. Age is generally not a barrier, as internships focus on skills, education, and certification requirements such as completing relevant coursework and obtaining licensure or registration. Many interns start their programs after completing their education and are valued for their maturity and dedication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Respiratory Therapy Intern position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Respiratory Therapy Intern, you need a foundational understanding of respiratory anatomy and physiology, basic patient assessment skills, and current enrollment in or completion of coursework from an accredited respiratory therapy program. Familiarity with respiratory care equipment such as ventilators, nebulizers, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn are important soft skills that set candidates apart. These abilities help ensure safe, effective patient care and smooth collaboration within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

What types of responsibilities can I expect as a Respiratory Therapy Intern?

They can also work in home care, pulmonary rehabilitation, or pursue advanced certifications to move into healthcare management or specialized clinical positions.

Is RRT harder than RN?

Respiratory Therapy Interns typically undergo specialized training in respiratory care, which involves technical skills and knowledge of respiratory equipment and procedures. Registered Nurses (RNs) have a broader scope of practice, including patient care, medication administration, and health assessments, often requiring more extensive education and clinical hours. The difficulty depends on individual strengths and the specific demands of each role, but RNs generally have a more comprehensive and longer training process.
