Interns assist with patient assessments, oxygen therapy, ventilator management, and other respiratory care procedures. This role allows aspiring respiratory therapists to apply their academic knowledge in real-world situations while developing critical skills. Interns typically work in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, or other healthcare facilities. The internship helps fulfill clinical hour requirements and prepares individuals for certification and licensure exams.

What types of responsibilities can I expect as a respiratory therapy intern?

As a Respiratory Therapy Intern, you will typically assist licensed respiratory therapists with patient assessments, administering treatments, and setting up or maintaining respiratory equipment. You may be involved in monitoring patient responses to therapy, documenting care in electronic health records, and supporting education for patients and their families. Interns often rotate through different departments, such as emergency, intensive care, and general wards, providing exposure to a variety of patient cases. This hands-on experience is supervised and designed to help you develop both technical and interpersonal skills essential for a future career in respiratory therapy.
