What does a physiotherapist intern do?

A Physiotherapist Intern is a student or recent graduate undergoing supervised practical training in a clinical setting. Their main responsibilities include assisting licensed physiotherapists in assessing, planning, and implementing rehabilitation programs for patients recovering from injuries or illnesses. Interns help with patient exercises, observe treatments, document progress, and learn to use various therapeutic equipment. This hands-on experience is essential for developing clinical skills and gaining exposure to real-world scenarios before becoming fully qualified physiotherapists.

What types of supervision and mentorship can a physiotherapist intern expect during their internship?

As a Physiotherapist Intern, you will typically work under the guidance of licensed physiotherapists who provide close supervision and mentorship. You can expect regular feedback sessions, opportunities to observe experienced professionals, and gradually increasing responsibilities as you build your skills. Most internships include structured learning objectives, hands-on patient care, and collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare teams. This supportive environment is designed to help you gain confidence, refine your clinical techniques, and prepare for independent practice.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a physiotherapist intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Physiotherapist Intern, you need a foundational understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and therapeutic exercise, typically gained through a relevant degree program or coursework. Familiarity with rehabilitation equipment, patient management software, and basic assessment tools is important for daily tasks. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and a willingness to learn help interns build rapport with patients and integrate feedback from supervisors. These skills ensure safe, effective patient care and support professional growth in a clinical environment.
