The Position

Serves as senior leader for all Pricing, Contracting and Reimbursement strategies, operations and governance  for US Operations (USO) ensuring profitable market access  and product performance goals are met. Is the strategic partner to USO Pricing Committee  in regard to setting pricing and contracting strategy for the organization. Provides leadership guidance to staff and ensures all internal and external regulations are adhered to. Proactively leads company efforts to guide strategy updates related to industry and government changes (ie; Healthcare Reform).

Relationships

This position reports to the Senior Vice President, Finance and Operations and is a member of the F&O  Leadership Team. Regularly interacts with the SVP, Market Access & Public Affairs (MAPA), VPs of Market Access Strategy (Franchise & Channel Strategy), VP, Market Access National & Area Account Teams, Brand Marketing VPs, VP, Public Affairs, Global Market Access & Strategic Pricing, Legal, Finance & Supply Chain  as well as the Executive Team (ET). Interacts with all levels and departments at Novo Nordisk and NNAS. External relationships include major customers such as PBM/payers, federal and state government officials, health systems  and a host of related vendors and consultants. Leads a team of other people leaders (6 direct reports) and organization of nearly 60 pricing and contract operations professionals.

Essential Functions

  • Pricing Governance - facilitator for USO Pricing Committee (PC) - setting the strategic agenda for decisions at Pricing Committee, ensuring rigorous analysis of business cases coming to the PC around list price, contracting strategy, pre-deal evaluation, patient support programs and other price concessions from Gross to Net
    • Act as strategic partner to USO ET, MAPA and Global; responsible for providing leadership for pricing and revenue management in highly competitive pricing environment
    • Collaborates with MAPA and Global Strategic Pricing to secure optimal reimbursement of launch products as well as recommendations for inline products.  Defines Pricing SOPs with Global Strategic Pricing ensuring USO operates within the global mandate. Responsible for the full lifecycle from list price guidance/operations, pre-deal/offer development, contract development and negotiation, government pricing compliance and reporting, rebate and chargeback operations, post deal and G2N insights
    • Responsible for all USO sell side contracts to key customers including PBM's, payers, and Federal agencies for product formulary coverage for all channels
    • Manage >$50 billion in Gross to Net concessions Partners closely with MAPA and Patient Support Programs Teams to assess and operationalize Alternative Model arrangements to grow self-pay channels. Ensuring Alternative Models provide sufficient data transparency to achieve company goals
      • Direct pricing, contract operations and contract assessment and reimbursement initiatives to ensure effective coordination and implementation with Novo Nordisk Diabetes and Rare Disease  Sales and Trade groups and to optimize profitability of business in all commercial, government, and trade segments (and individual accounts) of Novo Nordisk
      • Ensure accuracy and results of pricing data
      • Ensure that competitive discounting and rebating practices maximize profitability and are aligned to strategic direction of Novo Nordisk
      • In concert with the Public  Affairs group identifies, leads, directs and collaborates in efforts to seek optimal reimbursement and remove or mitigate encumbrances to the reimbursement of Novo Nordisk products at the state, Federal or commercial level
      • Is accountable to insure that contracting efforts for all areas of the contracted business within Novo Nordisk, including but not limited to, VA/DoD, Institutions, GPOs, Medicaid, Managed Care and Retail accounts are compliant with all guidelines from an internal NNI, NNAS, legal, regulatory and SarbOx perspective
      • Leads the pricing & contracting alignment with all stakeholders and Pricing Committee
      • Leads, directs and develops all managed markets, trade, government, long term care and institutional, retail and all commercial pricing, contract operations and reimbursement strategies and initiatives within Novo Nordisk to insure reimbursement, allow market penetration for launch products, maximize profitability goals, and to set and monitor pricing to increase market share and performance for all Novo Nordisk new and existing products
      • Manage and coordinate Pricing and Contracting strategies to optimize commercial and Government sales and profitability and insure market competitiveness
      • Monitor and report societal and industry developments that impact Novo Nordisk from a pricing, contracting and reimbursement perspective
      • Oversee the development and implementation of a world-class pricing and strategy and assists Novo Nordisk in successfully implementing major growth plans
      • Oversee the development and implementation of targeted customer segmentation, pricing, contracting and reimbursement strategies that result in optimized market position and profitability for Novo Nordisk products. Oversee the development of systems and processes to improve product reimbursement, and profitability. Oversee the development, monitoring and analysis of key managed care trade and government metrics to ensure profitability targets are achieved and contracted business is on track. Metrics include sales and market share performance formulary status of all targeted accounts, ROI, customer feedback etc
      • Oversee the timely and accurate monitoring and execution of price changes.Oversees off-shore team of ~17 professionals in GBS Bangalore supporting key processes
      • Partner with Finance and Financial Planning and Analysis to ensure accurate rebate forecasting
      • Proactively partner with Strategic Pricing in Denmark and with other Novo Nordisk affiliates as needed apprising them of US managed care, trade and government plans and programs that could impact NNI product pricing
      • Provide strategic direction for ensuring appropriate market pricing for all NNI products
      • Revenue Management - ensures revenue capture through driving capabilities around rebate validation/scrubbing and business assurance.  Through rigorous validation/scrubbing drives rebate savings in excess of $1 billion to minimize/mitigate against duplicate discounts.  Leads dispute negotiations with Top customers to ensure compliance with contract terms and conditions.  Implements tools/technologies to identify data anomalies and identify findings around ineligible rebates
      • Responsible for driving managed care, trade, retail and government account effectiveness and efficiencies, "pressure test" and vet  contracting and pricing strategies, and implementing meaningful systems and processes within the respective operational areas
  • Systems & Technology - system owner for Model N (revenue management system for all price concessions for USO and chairs OTC System Advisory Board (SAB) overseeing technology roadmap.  Ensures key systems comply with Sarbox requirements and team has been trained to maintain high state of compliance.  Ensures systems meet key business needs in changing environment
  • Works in close collaboration with the SVP, MAPA, MAPA Leadership Team, MAPA National & Area Account Teams, Brand Marketing VPs, Public Affairs, Global Market Access & Strategic Pricing, Legal, Finance & Supply Chain

Physical Requirements

10-20% overnight travel required.

Development of People

Supervisory. Ensure that reporting personnel have individual development plans (IDP), with annual goals and measurements that are consistent with the priorities of the business, and that interim reviews are held so that their work is focused on those priorities, and they understand their level of accountability for results and the measurement process. Ensure that the IDP forms include completed learning and aspiration plans and are in place for all reporting personnel to enable the achievement of goals and capability to assume increased levels of responsibility. Manage the application and communication of all Novo Nordisk policies, procedures, and Novo Nordisk Way.

Qualifications

  • A College degree required, MBA strongly preferred
  • At least 15 years progressive pricing/contracting, market access, revenue management  or finance  related experience in the healthcare/pharmaceutical industry
  • At least 10 years prior people leadership experience. Strong motivator and developer of people
  • Effectively prioritizes and spends his/her time and the time of others on what is important. Develops accurate short and long term plans, and business analysis. Ensures timely execution and follow-up. Meets deadlines
  • Anticipates problems and roadblocks to avoid crisis management
  • Proficient knowledge of Government Pricing programs:  Medicaid Drug Rebate Program and calculations (AMP, BP), Medicare Program and calculations (ASP), and VA programs and calculations (Non-FAMP, FCP, FSS)
  • Knowledge of diabetes, managed care, trade and government marketplace required
  • Relationships with managed care, trade, and government executives required
  • Strong ability to work well with related functions and influence others

The base compensation range for this position is $280,800 to $491,400. Base compensation is determined based on a number of factors. This position is also eligible for a company bonus based on individual and company performance.Novo Nordisk offers long-term incentive compensation and or company vehicles depending on the position's level or other company factors.
