Daily Hours: 8.5 (.5 Unpaid Lunch)

Civil Service Title: Civil Service Title: Automotive Mechanic
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:
(A) Graduation with an Associate's degree or possession of a certificate, either of which must be in an automotive
field; OR,
(B) Six (6) months paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as an automotive mechanic; OR,
(C) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B), above.
NOTE: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or
specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of
Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories,
you must provide independent verification of equivalency. A list of acceptable companies who provide this service
can be found on the Internet at http://www.cs.ny.gov/jobseeker/degrees.cfm. You must pay the required evaluation
fee.
Desired Qualifications:
Minimum of five years experience in school bus or heavy truck repairs and maintenance;
Good knowledge of the principles of heavy equipment mechanics including systems and parts operations, systems and parts interrelationships and systems and parts functions;
Good knowledge of the methods and practices involved in repairs to heavy equipment;
Good knowledge of shop equipment, tools, electronic diagnostic equipment, parts and their potential use;
Working knowledge of the mechanical operation and terminology of school buses;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervision and District administration.
Position Summary/Responsibilities:
Performs heavy equipment and automotive repairs to gasoline, diesel engines, and hydraulic systems;
Repairs and rebuilds some automotive systems such as cooling, electrical, exhaust, steering and suspension, fuel system, brake, and drive train;
Repairs preventative maintenance functions including lubrication, fluid checks, minor tune-ups and safety inspections of trucks, buses, and other heavy equipment;
Operates machine shop equipment such as grinder, drill presses and other working machine to make, rebuild or repair parts for automotive equipment;
Diagnoses chronic automotive problems caused by maladjustments, worn, damaged, or defective parts;
May be asked to drive a school bus with children on occasion;
Other duties as assigned.
