This position is eligible for telework which is currently one day per week. New hires are eligible to apply 30 days after their effective date of hire.

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for the delivery of high-quality public art to create a customer-friendly environment that is inviting and secure and that advances the MTA's goal of improving customer experience.

Specifically, the Manager is responsible for providing professional-level project management in planning, implementing, and evaluating multiple projects within the Permanent Art Program. From initial stages of site planning to project completion, in concert with Construction & Development staff and consultants, the Manager serves as coordinator and Arts & Design representative for MTA agency projects (Construction & Development, Metro-North, LIRR, Staten Island Railway, New York City Bus, Bridges and Tunnels). The Manager is skilled in and responsible for one or more of program areas including: art policy stewardship; permanent public art commission and management; architectural review; artwork conservation; records management; new media, app and website content development; and internal and external communications.

Responsibilities:

  • Permanent Art Program: Lead the artist selection process and commission approximately 10 capitally funded projects annually; oversee approximately 20-25 capitally funded projects on an ongoing basis. Negotiate and prepare contracts, oversee procurement process, monitor construction progress on each project, problem-solve engineering and technical design issues in coordination with construction and design managers and consultants from NYCT, MNR, LIRR, Staten Island Railway, New York City Bus and Bridges and Tunnels for capitally funded projects that must be delivered on time and within budget.
  • Conservation Initiative: Coordinate with internal colleagues to survey, assess, analyze, creatively problem-solve, and expertly maintain and repair a growing collection of more than 400 permanent artwork assets with a value of more than $290 million and spanning 5,000 square miles throughout the MTA system. Under the supervision of the Deputy Director, this role shall extend to developing solutions and implementing cost-effective, long-term conservation plans; contributing to a conservation database to document and track condition of all artwork assets in the system; and conducting research and analyzing findings on new innovative materials and methods of fabrication and construction.
  • Archive Program: Develop and coordinate departmental archival materials including historic documents, film and photographic prints, and digital data and new media assets, for internal and external documentation, scholarship and education. Under the supervision of the Deputy Director, this role shall extend to developing recommendations for a system to index and organize digital archives; photographic and historic archives; records management procedures; and administration of publication/reproduction rights and permissions protocols.
  • Poster Program: Provide programming and production support as needed for award-winning graphic poster and art program that promotes and celebrates mass transit in the New York Metro region.
  • Digital Art Program: Provide programming support as needed for commissioning of 3-4 new media artworks for Fulton Center, Grand Central Madison and other locations in the MTA system annually.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Professional experience and knowledge of public art and architecture
  • Strong project management experience including knowledge of and familiarity with technical issues for art integration and materials, and construction and urban design principles and terminology
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, yet simultaneously be willing to take direction from the Director and Deputy Director and contribute to department’s overall goals as a team player
  • Strong experience in administration, including overseeing budgets
  • Excellent oral presentation and writing skills; proven ability to write meeting minutes and related project status reports
  • Excellent, professional, interpersonal skills

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) required, or equivalent in experience in Arts Administration, Art Education, Visual Arts, or Art History;
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working with arts organizations and artists

The Following is/are preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Arts/Sciences (MA/MS) preferred
  • Strong technical knowledge and experience in computer database programs and application for maintaining the Permanent Art Program projects database
  • Strong working knowledge of duties in managing and maintaining a vastly growing art collection
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Knowledge of public agency administration/organization
  • Knowledgeable design background

May need to work outside of normal work hours (i.e., evenings and weekends)

Travel may be required to other MTA locations or other external sites.
