Job description

St. Luke's School, a secular (non-religious), college-preparatory day school serving grades 5 through 12 in New Canaan, Connecticut, seeks a part-time Library Technician. We hope to add a dynamic, detail-oriented Library professional to help manage abundant resources, including a carefully curated print collection, more than 200k e-books, and a robust suite of databases. They will be interested in library and information sciences, understand adolescents' needs, and take great joy in working with them. Reporting directly to the Library Director, the Library Technician will be a highly collaborative faculty partner who values the school's mission to empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information.  

Primary Job Responsibilities:

Library Support

  • Help foster a culture of reading in the St. Luke's community through programming, collaboration, outreach, and instructing patrons in the use of print and digital resources
  • Assist patrons with checking materials in and out, and register new accounts
  • Help users find books and other materials, assisting with computer and internet access, and providing basic readers' advisory services
  • Coordinate parent volunteers
  • Maintain physical space, including creating seasonal/periodic displays, book talkers, appeal, and general straightening up of the shelves and space
  • Create marketing materials for library patrons (e.g., book recommendations, services)
  • Replenish materials for student use
  • Monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior in the Library and other school spaces, and collaborate with Upper School Dean of Students on supervision of the space

Collection Maintenance

  • Help maintain an up-to-date, culturally diverse collection of print resources appropriate to the Middle & Upper School curriculum, utilizing appropriate listservs, reviews, and media publications
  • Perform circulation desk duties and provide guidance to students and faculty in information retrieval, effective searching, and evaluation of information
  • Replace damaged and lost materials and process them into the catalog
  • Complete yearly inventory, and use statistics to maintain patron accounts, repurchase lost and damaged material, weed and repurchase as needed
  • Perform original and copy cataloging on purchases
  • Process all items in the collection with support from volunteers

Key Skills and Qualities:

  • 2 years of experience as a Library Aide or Library Technician or a Master's Degree in Library and Information Sciences
  • Interest and experience in working with adolescents (ages 10-18)
  • Library catalog automation system preferred (e.g., Follett Destiny)

Compensation & Schedule:

  • Pay: $30/hour, non-exempt
  • Hours: M-F 9:00 am-12 pm (15 hours/week)  
  • Schedule: School Year Staff - follows the 10-month academic calendar for breaks and holidays
  • Job type:  Part-Time, no benefits
  • Work location: In-person
  • NOTE: New employees attend a week-long orientation in August, prior to the start of school.
