Job description

Basic Commerce and Industries, Inc. (BCI) has a part-time opening for a human factors engineer (HFE) with experience in anthropometric modeling for assessment and verification of ship designs, compartment arrangements, and shipboard equipment.
Job Location: Remote (part-time)
Job Start Date: Summer/ Fall 2026
Shift: Days
Experience Required:
A master's degree in human factors engineering or a related field (e.g., industrial engineering or experimental psychology) or a relevant Bachelor's degree with additional professional experience is required. Practical experience in workspace or workstation evaluation via human engineering design standards is also required. Experience must include development and use of human figure models for ergonomic and anthropometric evaluations of the layout and arrangement of work environments.
Description of Duties:
  • Support methodology refinement for design assessments and anthropometric-based risk assessments of ship compartments and arrangements.
  • Develop boundary case or alternative anthropometric methods for evaluation and risk assessment of ship design, arrangement, and equipment characteristics that do not meet design criteria of MIL-STD-1472 and/or ASTM F1166.
  • Support the development of surface navy and USCG anthropometric boundary cases for assessment of ship designs, compartment arrangements, and shipboard equipment through selection of key personnel characteristics and use of best available data sets.

Applicants must be US citizens. A current Secret or Top Secret DoD security clearance is strongly desired. Applicants will be subjected to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
