GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The position is responsible for assisting the school nurse in the implementation of the school's student health services program.
ESSENTIAL TASKS

  • Follow the school nurse's instructions and procedures to assist in the daily operation of the clinic.
  • Keep the school nurse informed as to the urgency of student needs.
  • Offer medical advice as directed by the school nurse.
  • Administer care to students as directed, contact parents as appropriate.
  • Assist with medications only when directed by the school nurse.
  • Sign students into the clinic, noting the reason for requesting services.
  • Take student's temperature when appropriate.
  • Share information or locate students as requested by the school nurse.
  • Answer clinic phone calls; summarize requests to school nurse.
  • Assist the school nurse with the maintenance of records and reports (e.g., emergency forms and daily or monthly reports).
  • Provide minor care and first aid as authorized by the school nurse.
  • Complete work in the time specified.
  • Help maintain and support the school clinic.
  • Assist with screening programs.
  • Assist with medically involved or medically fragile students as directed by the school nurse.
  • Perform related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of universal procedures for communicable diseases and blood-borne pathogens; ability to maintain confidential files and information and to compile reports; ability to deal effectively with students and teachers; ability to operate standard office, word and data processing equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students and associates.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required: High school diploma or GED. Must either have a certification or have successfully passed an exam from a nationally recognized program as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Patient Care Technician (PCT) or similar, OR hold a current certification or license, and be in good standing as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must have an active Basic Life Support BLS CPR/AED for Healthcare Providers Certification with hands-on training and a minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Frequent sitting, walking, bending, grasping, fingering, repetitive motion, and reaching. Occasional standing, stooping, and physical management that includes supporting individuals with impaired weight bearing or unsteady gaits, repositioning individuals in therapeutic equipment: including use of hydraulic lifts to a maximum of 100 pounds with assistance. Work involves moderate expose to infectious disease. Ability to lift over 50 pounds occasionally. Requires timely and regular adherence to established work schedules.

Possession of a valid driver's license.
Certification/registration must be kept current through the completion of continuing education courses.

Salary Range: From/To
CNA or CMA hourly rate range: $16.79-$24.49
EMT hourly rate range: $17.99-$26.24
LPN hourly rate range: $19.28-$28.12
Compensation will be based on creditable years of full-time, verified work experience. The entry-level rate will be awarded at the time of hire. Upon the return of employment verification forms from the candidate's current and previous employers, the rate will be adjusted if creditable full-time experience is confirmed.
