Title: Packaging Mechanic (Pharmaceutical Manufacturing)

Job Summary

The Packaging Mechanic is responsible for setup, changeover, and maintenance tasks on assigned production lines to ensure smooth, efficient operation. This role requires comprehensive knowledge of each component of a packaging line, proper setup and connection of components, and the ability to perform changeovers within the expected timeframe.

Responsibilities
  • Perform moderate to complex adjustments, maintenance, and repairs on packaging and pneumatic equipment.
  • Conduct changeovers and set up packaging machines; troubleshoot mechanical and basic electrical issues and perform necessary repairs.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance on packaging machinery, conveyors, and compressors.
  • Assist with equipment installations and complete work orders to repair machinery.
  • Read and interpret equipment manuals to perform required maintenance.
  • Diagnose problems, replace or repair parts, test, and adjust equipment.
  • Safely use hand tools, power tools, electric meters, and material-handling equipment.
  • Independently set up full packaging line configurations consisting of multiple machines.
  • Detect faulty operations or defective materials and report issues to supervisors.
  • Ensure full compliance with company policies, cGMPs, SOPs, and Ethical Business Practices.
  • Complete all required documentation such as operation logs and batch records.
  • Ensure product meets all quality standards, including in-process inspection, sampling, and testing.
  • Guide and coach Packaging Operators in safe and effective machine operation and breakdown/cleaning procedures.
  • Maintain proper gowning and hygiene per SOPs, cGMPs, and company policies.
  • Follow all safety rules and help maintain a safe working environment.
  • Assist with other building mechanical or maintenance needs as required.
  • Maintain punctual and regular attendance.
  • Work extended hours and occasional weekend overtime as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 2+ years of experience as a packaging mechanic.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, food, cosmetics, or related manufacturing.
  • At least 3 years of maintenance experience on bottle packaging lines, including repairs, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Basic English communication skills (reading & speaking).

Relevant Bottle Packaging Line Equipment Includes:
Bottle unscrambler, tablet counter, slat filler, capper, cap induction sealer, labeler, neck/body bander, heat shrink tunnel, pack-off table, accumulation table, cartoner, QR code printers, tray/case forming machines, case packer, case taper, and dust collectors.

Skills & Competencies
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team and assist others.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, electrical schematics, operating manuals, maintenance manuals, work orders, and repair part requests.
  • Skilled in using measuring devices such as tape measures (standard & metric), micrometers, calipers, scales, and volt/ohm meters (VOM).
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, including the ability to disassemble, repair, and troubleshoot machinery.
  • Knowledge of cGMPs, OSHA standards, and other applicable regulations.
  • Ability to follow written instructions precisely and perform basic math.
  • Basic English reading and writing proficiency.
  • PLC experience is a plus.
  • General PC proficiency.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs., and occasionally up to 50 lbs.
  • Standing and walking on the production floor for a minimum of 7 hours per shift.
  • Frequent use of hands for handling and operating equipment; bending, squatting, reaching above shoulder height.
  • Occasional work on rolling ladders or step stools; kneeling to clean under equipment.
  • Must be able to wear full PPE: lab coat, face mask, booties, gloves, safety glasses/goggles, safety shoes, respirators.
