Their responsibilities often include monitoring the safety and well-being of clients while they sleep, assisting with nighttime routines, and responding to any emergencies that may arise. Overnight DSPs play a critical role in supporting clients’ independence and ensuring a safe and comfortable environment throughout the night. This position may also involve light housekeeping and documenting any incidents or changes in client condition.

What Are Overnight Jobs for Direct Support Professionals?

As a direct support professional (DSP), you work directly with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As a DSP, you typically work in a group home setting, and your duties include assisting individuals with daily living tasks from personal care to cooking. Depending on an individual’s disability, you may need to provide more assistance, but your primary role is to monitor and help an individual be more independent. The main differences between an overnight direct support professional and a day time DSP is that you provide care before bed, during the overnight hours, and when individuals wake up in the morning. The overnight shift responsibilities may require you to stay awake, or some overnight DSPs can sleep during the shift as long as they attend to all needs during the night.

Employers typically provide training in crisis intervention and encourage teamwork so that staff can feel supported even during overnight shifts.

ABOUT THE ARC OF CUMBERLAND AND PERRY COUNTIES

The lack of services for people with disabilities led a group of parents to band together in 1953 to form The Arc of Cumberland and Perry Counties (CPARC). For decades, children and adults with disabilities were systematically denied educational opportunities, vocational training jobs, housing, and almost every other right and service that people without disabilities took for granted. Today, our staff continues to advocate for people with disabilities; offer tools and training to help families; and ensure that individuals live, work, and play in their community.

We would not be able to achieve our mission to empower, inspire, and educate people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families, and the community without our staff. Here at CPARC, we have a team-oriented culture where we work together and treat each other like family. Because we value the input of each employee, we have an open-door policy. We also offer top compensation and benefits.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL (DSP)

As a Direct Support Professional (DSP), you support people with disabilities to live their best lives as independently as possible. You assist with activities of daily living such as household maintenance, transportation, administration of medications, grocery shopping, meal preparation, personal care, and more. While supporting people with disabilities, you build strong relationships while learning their individual differences in ability, personality, interests, learning, motivation, likes, and dislikes. This helps you to provide the best care. In this position, you find the work of supporting people with disabilities to live amazing lives according to their own needs and desires extremely rewarding!
