SUMMARY Under general supervision, but according to established policies and procedures, performs a variety of non-medical duties in support of Surgical Services. Such activities include, but are not limited to: Transporting patients to and from the Operating Room Picking up and/or delivering supplies, materials, specimens, cultures, and the like Assisting in preoperative scrubs Assisting in lifting, positioning, and supporting patients Cleaning and preparing equipment utilized in surgical procedures Preparing material for sterilization Assisting in cleaning and maintaining the operating rooms Assembling charge form packets Brown University Health employees are expected to successfully role model the organization's values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence as these values guide our everyday actions with patients, customers, and one another. The core Success Factors include: Instill Trust and Value Differences Patient and Community Focus and Collaborate RESPONSIBILITIES Transports patients to and from the surgical suite Reviews preoperative patient charts in order to ensure that all forms are signed and that all tests are completed; informs appropriate nursing personnel of discrepancies Assists in surgical room preparation by ensuring basic supplies are available such as blankets, solutions, and syringes Cleans furniture and equipment between cases Obtains necessary supplies and equipment required for specific procedures Assists in prepping patients for surgery; assists with preoperative scrubs; lifts, moves, and positions patients; supports and holds patients for spinal anesthesia injection and the like Routinely inventories, requisitions, receives, and stocks supplies in established areas, including sterile linen, instruments, scrub clothes, and the like in order to ensure availability to meet anticipated needs Picks up supplies and materials for Surgical Services from various areas of the Hospital such as pharmaceuticals, blood and plasma, as well as routine supplies required by the department Delivers cultures and surgery specimens to designated areas of the Hospital for analysis as appropriate Assists in general cleaning and maintenance of the Operating Room such as washing equipment, sorting and stocking supplies, cleaning rooms, washing stretchers, and changing light bulbs and the like Cleans, dries, packages, and seals a variety of supplies and materials to be sterilized, such as washing, assembling, and wrapping basin sets for sterilization Occasionally operates steam/water pressure sterilizers in order to clean and sterilize items Assembles patient record packs of charge slips, appropriate for specific surgical procedures, to be completed by others MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS BASIC KNOWLEDGE High School Diploma or GED preferred Ability to recognize changes in patient's condition and report such to nursing personnel Ability to perform simple numerical calculations in order to calculate and requisition supplies Knowledge of aseptic techniques in order to ensure proper cleaning of rooms, equipment, and materials Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process Ability to read, write, and understand English, with ability to perform simple numerical calculations EXPERIENCE One to three months' on-the-job training and experience WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Physical abilities to transport patients throughout the Hospital, to assist in lifting and positioning patients, and to clean and set up equipment Works in the Operating Room area and is exposed to odors, bodily fluids, etc. when assisting with patients Required to work for extended periods in a standing position when assisting with preoperative procedures Some exposure to chemical fumes and infectious disease when cleaning equipment and rooms Frequent standing, walking, lifting, and carrying in order to clean equipment and replenish supplies, transport patients and materials, and stock areas Hazards of injury are minimized by adherence to established safety precautions SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY None.
