Job description

Join our dedicated team as we work to advance and operate energy systems and apply for our Chief Operating Engineer position.

The Chief Operating Engineer is responsible for all activities related to the operation and maintenance of the plant under the direction of the District Manager. 

Minimum Requirements to be successful in this role:

  • High School Diploma with strong technical knowledge related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of the high-pressure steam heating plant, high-pressure boilers and/or combustion turbines. 
  • Currently hold a valid State of Minnesota Chief Engineer Grade A Stationary Engineer’s License.
  • Five (5) years or more of experience in the operations of a large, high pressure steam heating plant, in high pressure boiler operation and/or in combustion turbine operation. 
  • Demonstrate ability to coordinate operations and maintenance activities and set and achieve goals with a high degree of self-initiation and independence. 
  • Ability to work well with others, to communicate clearly both orally and in writing and to direct and/or train others. 
  • Familiarity with boiler, turbine and chiller equipment and their auxiliaries and with all types of maintenance work. 
  • Computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet, and plant controls applications. 
  • Able to read, analyze, and interpret mechanical and electrical schematics/blueprints. 

Preferred Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher.
  • Supervisory and management experience. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Manages day to day operations of the Southeast, Main, or St. Paul Steam Heating Plant.
  1. Schedules plant maintenance/outages, including plant walkdowns with potential bidders.
  1. Responsible for plant procurement and adherence to Company policies and procedures relating to same.
  1. Responsible for approving employee timecards, along with allocating their schedules.
  1. Assist with the annual Business and Financial Planning efforts to be presented to Ever-Green Energy management.
  1. Ensure the safe and reliable operation of the steam plants.

Work Schedule:

Primary schedule consists of Monday through Friday daytime hours, with paid holidays. Emergency and special conditions may involve weekends, holidays, and unscheduled hours. No overtime.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to communicate verbally by expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to clearly impart oral information to other workers, customers, or the public; ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds; keyboarding; near vision acuity at approximately 20 inches or less; sitting; and standing/walking.

The employee is frequently required to climb ramps/stairs; far visual acuity of 20 feet or more; fine manipulation by picking, pinching, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm as in gross manipulation; lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.; peripheral vision of observing an area that can been seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point; and stooping.

The employee is occasionally required to climb ladders/ropes/scaffolding; crawling; crouching; gross manipulation by seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hands; foot/leg controls; kneeling; pushing; pulling; reaching at/below shoulder level by extending hand and arms from 0 up to 150 degrees in a vertical arc; reaching overhead by extending hands and arms in a 150 to 180 degrees vertical arc; and confined space with limited entry or exit.

Must be capable of maneuvering throughout industrial facilities such as energy plants and building HVAC mechanical rooms, etc.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. This position involves working in a steam, hot water, and/or chilled water plant and/or its distribution system. While performing job duties, employees may occasionally encounter potential hazards, including fumes, airborne particles, high-pressure steam in piping or equipment, both hot and cold temperatures, and hazards associated with moving machinery. The work environment's noise level typically ranges from moderate to loud. Other potential hazards common to heating and cooling plants may include confined spaces, slippery surfaces, rotating equipment, chemical handling (e.g., water treatment chemicals), and burns. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided and physical controls are in place as needed to mitigate these risks.

The salary range for this position is: $100,000 to $120,000.
