Job description

The Fine Arts Library is seeking undergraduate student workers with federal work-study for the 2026/2027 academic year to assistant with library tasks such as providing information services and circulating the collection.
Student Library Assistants provide front-line customer service at the Fine Arts Library. They support circulation and information services. The Fine Arts Library provides research support and collections for architecture,
art history, archaeology, and the classics department.
This position focuses on tasks related to circulation services, such as checking out and discharging library materials and providing information. Student assistants assist with retrieving books, searching for lost items, special projects and occasional shelving. Students interested in this position should be dependable, have excellent attention to detail, and be proactive in helping others. Data entry skills, knowledge of standard office programs, and the ability to work within library guidelines and policies are expected. Students Assistants will also need to be able to work independently, and to learn the Library of Congress call number system.
Work takes place at an Information and Services Desk, so reliability is essential.
This position will start on August 25th of 2026, and end on May 14th, 2027. The position is eligible for renewal. Most library assistants are scheduled to work 8 to 12 hours per week, with the option to pick up dropped shifts.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Help create a welcoming, informative environment for library patrons by answering basic directional, circulation, and library policy questions.
  • Charge, discharge, renew and retrieve library materials for patrons.
  • Help patrons locate materials in the stacks.
  • Provide basic assistance with printers and other assorted library technology.
  • Record question types and collect statistics at desk though library software.
  • Assist in opening or closing the library during the first or final shifts of the day.
  • Assist in maintaining the orderly appearance of the library.
  • Must work a minimum of 6 hours a week (maximum of 20 hours/week), including weekends and during exam periods.
  • Adhere to all library policies and procedures.
  • Assist with general library duties as required and special projects as assigned.
  • Be available to work from the date of hire through the last day of exams for Spring 2027.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Must be a current UVA undergraduate student enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours. ***Federal Work-Study eligibility is required.
